After a long pause, the snow returned overnight, and I was woken early this morning by O. the Super Super firing up the snowblower so people could get their cars out of the garage. It's coming down thick and heavy, and looks pretty windy, too. Not quite Snowpocalypse, but impressive. They're predicting up to 10" for the area. Here's hoping everyone who wanted a snow day gets one... Me? No snow day. Work goes on as scheduled. I know, you're all sooooo sorry for me. I do have to go out into the snow later. I'll report back on how deep it actually got.

EtA: when I went out to the post office just now (9:30) there was about 5" on the ground where it hadn't been shoveled or plowed, and it was coming down fast.

Meanwhile, some Fun & Good news!

I am informed that FREE FALL has been nominated for Best Novel in the Chronic Rift's 2008 Roundtable Awards. I'm delighted to be nominated, absolutely and have no expectation of winning, since I share the slate with a guy named Gaiman, and a guy named Doctorow, and a guy named Steele and a Kat named Richardson, all of whom can wipe the floor with me, fans-wise. But that's okay. I can haz nominayshun! Thanks to everyone who gave me the nod, and everyone should feel free to vote for FREE FALL as the underdog. ;-)

In other good news, I draw a deep breath and gird my introverted self up, and announce that yes, I will be at Dragon*Con. I'm actually looking forward to it -- my memory of the last time I went (back in the early 90's!) was that the costuming was breathtaking. I'm told it's even gotten more intense? I'll bring an extra memory card for my camera.

from our own Michael Jones @ Green Man Review:

(the bolded bits are my doing)
------------------

the-story-so-far recap )

Free Fall is the fifth book in the Retrievers series, and Gilman pretty much kicks things up to eleven as she moves all of the pieces on the board towards the inevitable confrontation. Silence, Talents, Lonejacks, Fatae and humans alike all have their parts to play as things get epically [sic] messy and the current story arc reaches its climax and conclusion. It's a fast-paced story, as electrical and sharp as the current our heroine wields against her enemies, as raw and ragged as the emotions she experiences as Wren Valere goes through one of the worst times of her life.

Not that it's all hard-hitting action, or blazing magical combat. Free Fall doesn't skimp on the characterization or development, especially as Gilman looks as those closest to Wren and how events have affected them. From Sergei, whose conflicting loyalties are brought to a breaking point; to the demon P.B. who decides that now is the time and place to make a stand; to Bonnie, Wren's friend and fellow Talent who can't approve of the way things are going; to all of Manhattan's Fatae, we see the cost of this war . . . and what they stand to lose if things go against them.

One of the strong points of Gilman's setting here is that actions have consequences, and power has a price, and we see both of these things in full force. Everything Wren does causes a reaction, and everything the Silence does causes a reaction, and in some cases, those separate yet equal reactions end up feeding off one another. It's almost ironic that at one point, the Silence realizes that they, in fact, provoked Wren into taking things further than she would have done ordinarily, thus bringing her wrath down upon them . . . and it's their fault. Meanwhile, Wren taps into far greater power than she normally uses, and risks losing herself to the current, a much-feared fate known as "wizzing" among the Talents. There's a cost to using the level she does, and she may very well pay that price with her soul. Gilman's not afraid to show us these costs, as both major and minor characters get taken off the board throughout the course of the series and the story. Change happens, and people grow, which is always satisfying in a series like this, where it would be tempting to maintain a certain status quo.

I really enjoyed Free Fall, like I have the rest of the series. It's strong, enjoyable, complex stories like this which have made Harlequin's Luna line more than just another romance imprint, and you can bet I'll be eagerly awaiting the next book.
lagilman: coffee or die (free fall)
Got word this morning that Free Fall has gone into a second printing. Yay!

(A sad thing about Luna/Harlequin is that getting information out of them is like getting tax return statements from Mrs. McCain. I suspect less disinclination-to-share and more no-clue-what-third-hand-is-doing. But frustrating, nonetheless -- especially when it's good news!)

And now, back to the salty salt mines...
lagilman: coffee or die (free fall)
No, this is a (mostly) serious question. In his most current roundup of books he's gotten for review, http://www.jeffvandermeer.com/2008/06/12/books-received-er-recently/ he singles out the two Luna titles (yes, including mine) as "two books I probably won't review." No given reason -- and no indication that he's already read our work and doesn't like it. Just...two Luna titles.

(and it's not because he has anything against fantasy, or even fantasy-with-sex, since he's got Lynn's newest in the main pile o' books and man am I jealous, she says with a pointed look at Lynn and Lynn's agent, who both promised her a copy)

Interesting.

EtA2: And Jeff, being a gentleman, responds. Thanks, Jeff!

EtA: in more important news, my turkey in garlic-tahini sauce with pasta turned out good but not spectacular. My sauce still fails to knock my sandals off. Must investigate further.

"Laura Anne Gilman has a fun series...(cuts for plot details). Free Fall (trade from Luna which I bought electronically) is lots of fun and this fifth tale provides a
solid conclusion to an excellent series."
-- Henry Leon Lazarus, University City Review

Nice, except for the fact that it's not actually the conclusion of the series, just that story-arc...oh well. Sixth book stands alone, so 'conclusion' works within a limited context.

And yay! for e-books!

My essay about writing fantasy for Luna -- and the connection between my dark fantasy-writing self and the romance-publishing establishment, and my penchant for non-Happily-Ever-After endings -- is up at http://paranormalromanceblog.wordpress.com/

somewhere an author earns her wings.

I ran across this reader-review of Free Fall that, despite giving me only 3/5 stars and pointing out a weakness that yes, I knew about but couldn't quite fix, made me do the authorial chair dance of glee, because, damn it, he got it.

The review itself is detailed in a spoilery way, but the chairboogie-causing line is: "It's an audacious plot and a strong character story as [Wren] wrestles with the morality and consequences of what she's doing."

Yes. Oh, yes. Very, very much yes. Happily Ever After in no way guarantees Easily Ever After.

A number of people got four answers right, but missed either 2 or 5.

I would have loved to send a copy to Anonymous, who also nailed it, but s/he never identified his/herself.... :-(

THE ANSWERS:

1. What what happened to Wren's mentor?
-- he wizzed (went crazy from current) and disappeared.
2. How can you identify a demon?
-- dark red eyes
3. What are five breeds of fatae specifically referenced in this series?
-- demon, rock-dragons, sea-serpents [okay, we don't see them until FREE FALL] griffins, nissanni, dryads, piskies, loup-garoux, fauns, gnomes, omaa-nih.... and more even I can't remember!
4. Where did Wren and Sergei first have sex?

The Contest the First is still on-going! Give me a haiku on why you want/deserve a copy of STAYING DEAD and you might win it! (Prizes awarded for best and worst offering, as judged by the judges). It runs until 15 April, so you still have time left to be creative! (competition for worst is pretty stiff though, I gotta say. You guys are scary! And I mean that in the best possible way)

Contest the Second will be posted on 4/16. Yes, you can enter both.

Also: As many of you know, I adore indie bookstores, and love to give 'em plugs (especially Pandemonium in MA, and Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego!). In fact, if you buy FREE FALL at an independent bookstore, and send me a scan or copy of the proof of purchase*, I'll not only send you a signed bookplate for it, but a sneak peek at the first chapter of BLOOD FROM STONE, a year ahead of everyone else!. Yes, even all y'all outside of the United States. This offer good through July 1 2008

Got a lovely e-mail yesterday from Mirna Denic at Rendezvous Bookstore in Australia, mentioning that they will be carrying FREE FALL (and have my entire backlist) in stock, for those of you Down Under who might be looking. http://www.rendezvousbooks.com is their main site, and this should take you directly to my page for ordering.

as to the letters:

Dear Amex: Please stop offering me a platinum card. Yes, it's very pretty. No, I don't want it. No means no! It was very nice of you to offer me that Food & Wine cookbook, though. Do you moonlight as crack dealers, or what?

Dear State of Connecticut DMV: I have moved. I registered with the NYS DMV. I no longer own the car you are trying to bill me to register. Get a clue!

Dear Dell: You make great computers. They're like the Timex of laptops. Your battery chargers, however? Notsomuch. The replacement you sent is dead. Send me a new one, plz.

Contest The First: For Newcomers, Latecomers who Want Another Copy, and People Who Just Can't Resist the Lure of A Prize.

As many of you know, and others will hopefully soon learn, Wren Valere uses haiku to focus her will and direct her current-magic. It's not always good haiku, lord knows, but she likes the pattern of 5-7-5, and how it forces her to be direct without being so specific that she limits the magic.

So. In haiku form, tell me why you deserve a copy of the first book in this series, STAYING DEAD. Are you a first-time reader who wants a cheap jumpstart on the series? An established fan looking to replace the copy your mother took off with? A die-hard e-bayer convinced that someday my signature will actually be worth something? Here's your chance.

(and yes, you can use senryu instead, if that's how you roll.)

All responses will be screened. The best and the worst (as judged by the judges) will receive a signed copy of STAYING DEAD for their efforts.

fine print: This contest will run until 15 April. The second contest will start up on 16 April. Yes, you can enter both!

*comes in, collapses* Long, very good day, including lunch with Madame Editrix and Madamoiselle Assistant Editrix, in which we regaled Mam'selle with stories of The Old Days, griped about Borders' new "face some books, get rid of the backlist" philosophy, and argued over the title for Bonnie #1 and how close together they can be scheduled (Me: "less than 9 months apart and I will kill you. I will." Madame: "I know, I promise, we won't")

While in the office I saw the four-star review in ROMANTIC TIMES, but forgot to get a x'ox of it, so I don't have the exact text to share. They liked it quite a lot, though. [livejournal.com profile] fashionista_35 comes through with the text:

The latest Retrievers novel is compulsively readable, fast paced and deadly serious. The lighthearted tone of prior volumes is almost totally gone, and it's a fitting change, as the stakes are so much higher. Wren continues to be an engaging and likable protagonist, one the reader can root for with all her heart.

Also, Darque Reviews has a review of FREE FALL (warning, the first few paras are slightly spoilery) and a related interview with moi. Checkitout.

And home to a copy of APEX 12, which has a completely different interview with me. Man, I get around, don't I?

Tomorrow, writing. Yes.
lagilman: coffee or die (free fall)
Oooo, bookses! A box o' FREE FALL just arrived at my door. *pets the new book* I'm a little cranky about the paper weight they used, but Is Not My Department and Not My Editor's Department Either. The words are still good, and that's what's important.

And is still Pretty Book.

Hrm. Maybe I should run a contest? What say you folk?

Oh, and some more reviews are coming in. I've been Klausnered, of course, and Don D'Amassa is pleased with what he read, describing the Retrievers series as "one of the most consistently satisfying of the current wave of contemporary fantasies with ass-kicking heroines." Y'know, I can live with that.

Soon the first negative review will hit, and I will sulk. I am a god! I suck! etc.

Meanwhile, in the other timestream I managed 1700 2300 2500 new words today. Next chapter kicks it up a notch, and characters disgrace themselves. This damned book needs a title, already. *pokes book impatiently* We have a working title. Waiting for editorial reaction.

Oh, and the contracts for "Dreamcatcher" arrived. Guess I know what I'm reading over, tonight.

From Publishers Weekly:

[starred review]FREE FALL
Laura Anne Gilman. Luna, $14.95 paper (352p) ISBN 978-0-373-80267-8

Picking up shortly after the devastating battle between humans and fey atop the Brooklyn Bridge in 2007’s Burning Bridges, Gilman’s compelling fifth foray into the fantastic netherworld of modern-day Manhattan takes an even darker turn. spoilery and slightly inaccurate plot details ) With streamlined prose, Gilman deftly weaves intricate plot threads and complex relationships into an almost painful buildup of violent suspense. The result is an intelligent and utterly gripping fantasy thriller, by far the best of the Retrievers series to date. (May)

*isn't sure if she should be doing a jaunty two-step or just passing out in delighted shock*

EtA: I knew, in my humble and biased opinion, that this was a very good book. My editor concurred. But you never know how that first review is going to come down...

EtA2: some of you may remember that the original title of this book was DOWN INTO DARKNESS. There was a reason for that....
lagilman: coffee or die (Default)
Back from the wilds of LonGisland, where our non-christmas-day was actually a family gathering a) in memory of my grandparents' wedding anniversay, and b) a celebration of my uncle's retirement (it was a semi-surprise party, in that nobody in my family can actually keep a party secret but the actual details remained vague).

Much food was consumed. Much, much very good food. And wine. And everyone got along, and no new family arguments broke out [continuing ones are a tradition and therefore Not Counted], and none of the NextGen did physical damage to the other, and we all managed to get home (or at least back into Manhattan) without traffic delays. Yay!

Meanwhile, I am halfway through the proof for FREE FALL (and I finally figured out where the artist got the cover image from, and wow he's good), and my dad has requested the newly reworked pages from TPEMB to read, based on his reading of the outline. Obviously I'm doing something right, as he's not usually the one with his hand out saying gimmie.

And under the heading of 'kudos to where kudos belong': in this instance to the passengers and crew of the 6 train this morning, when a fellow passenger had a petit mal seizure. A passenger near the intercom let the conductor know something was wrong. The conductor sent a crew member back, who called for paramedics and cops. The people sitting near the guy made him aware that he wasn't alone, that help was coming, and everyone gave him room and waited calmly for the train to start moving again, no grumbling or bitching. WTG, New Yorkers.

(of course, had he thrown up or something vile, there might have been less kindness. It was a very crowded train...)

And now I need to reassure the felines that yes, I am back, no I am not going to abandon them again for a few weeks, and no, I am not going to be guilted into giving them any people-food, so deal, furface. Oh, and finish the rest of the proofs, yah.

I hope everyone had a few good days, however you spent it, and if you, like me, are back at work until New Year's, it's of a restful, clearing-things-up sort of week....
lagilman: coffee or die (Default)
Elsewhere, various people are posting their daily schedule. Me? I don't have one. I get up at 6ish, unless I'm up earlier, and feed the felines. Everything else follows from there. I work at what needs to be done in order of importance, interest, and deadlines [including freelance and Occasional Employment], I exercise when my body tells me to (and it tells me so on a regular basis, being hyperactive from Day One), I socialize when I feel the need for interaction, and I sleep when I am exhausted.

I don't recommend this for everyone. I spent two decades living according to a specific pattern, and I like not having one, for now. I dislike doing the same thing over and over and over again. It bores me, and a bored meerkat is not a healthy meerkat.

That said? I have spent the last umpteenish hours working on a short story that is kicking. My. Ass.

I started it several months ago, just a random character sitting in a random setting, thinking some random thoughts. Generally, I write short fiction to work out an Issue I'm having trouble with, digging into causes and probable outcomes in a very organic fashion. It's a very different mental place from novel-writing, which combines story-telling with structural engineering.

This story, tho... I knew the issue, because I wasn't working it out so much as the realization that I had already worked it out, if that makes any sense. But the story itself wasn't building properly in my head.

And so it sat.

And then an image came to me, and I understood what the story was about, which meant I knew who it was. And the beginning made sense, and I was able to fill in the basic details of what happened, and then... brick wall. For whatever reason, I wasn't ready to write the story just yet.

Last night, after fiddling with another story, I opened up the file and wrote a large chunk of the opening, looked at the middle bits, and skipped ahead to write the ending. I do that so rarely I can count it on one hand, but I knew exactly what happened, and where everyone ends up, and why...

But the center is still sitting there like unrisen dough, just all...lumpy and floury.

Which means it needs more kneading. Bother.

Back to't.

a sample, for them as are interested... )

And proof that my schedule is mutable: before I could even hit 'send' on this, the doorbell rang. My UPS guy, handing over the author alterations (not quite proofs but close) for FREE FALL. Two weeks earlier than expected, and due back 1/7.

Never a dull moment.

Excuse me while I make another pot of caffeine.
lagilman: coffee or die (free fall)
Solicitation covers for FREE FALL arrived in the mail.

OMG the cover pops. Some day maybe I'll get text embossing, just because I'm a greedy geek that way, but this cover honestly doesn't need it.

The art has nothing to do with the actual story (although it kicks in on a psychological level, I'll grant them that). The title was not my first or even second choice. And I would never have thought that teal type on a purple-black background was a good idea. But I love love love this cover...

And I am ego-riffic enough to say that I still love the shout line I came up with:

"Nothing in life is free. Even if you steal it."

I currently have the damn thing propped up against my computer so I can look at it when I type. The fifth book in the series, and I'm as giddy as a first-timer. Okay, the giddiness will wear off in a few hours, I'm sure. And I'm not accosting strangers on the street squeaking "lookitmyBOOK!" But giddy, yes. And feeling fine with that, thanks muchly. :-)
