After long delays at every possible juncture, the paper edition of THE WORK OF HUNTERS / AN INTERRUPTED CRY (Sylvan Investigations #3 and #4) is in progress!

(I just saw the final page proofs, and am waiting on the final cover proof)

And there was much rejoicing, not the least from me, because having this undone was a MAJOR stressor in the back of my skull....

So if you backed the Kickstarter at that level, we'll be chasing you down for a mailing address, soon.  For everyone else, PlusOne Press should have the order info up on their website soon.  :-)

I am reminded that I haven't done a full-on shill in a while. So hey, here goes some...

When magic and murder collide, a half-trained seer and a former NYC cop-turned-PI may be your last chance....

Four novellas, no waiting!

Oh. Oh, hey. Lookit that! The 4th Sylvan Investigations novella, AN INTERRUPTED CRY, is up at Book View Cafe!

Danny Hendrickson — ex-cop turned PI — and his partner Ellen could be any low-rent private investigators trying to make a difference, and a living, in New York City.

Except Danny’s father was a faun, and Ellen is a storm-seer.

Which means that they bridge the line between human and fatae, between Talent and Null — and specialize in helping people who fall into the dangers between…

In “An Interrupted Cry,” a blackout hits New York City. Talent — cut off from the current that fuels their abilities — are at a disadvantage. Already reeling from one of her visions, Ellen discovers that her partner/mentor, Danny Hendrickson, has gone missing, leaving a violent scene behind…

…and the city is in the dark about what’s coming, in more ways than one.

And remember, not only are books at BVC DRM-free, so you can read them anywhere, on any device you like, but 95% of all monies go directly to the authors (5% goes to support BVC, which is _kind_ of like it all going to the authors).

(this edition has been slightly and carefully revised from the Kickstarter edition.)

It's heeeere....... the newest Cosa Nostradamus installment!

THE WORK OF HUNTERS (Sylvan Investigations #3)
$3.50 - A BVC Original

Danny Hendrickson – ex-cop turned PI – and his partner Ellen could be any low-rent private investigators trying to make a difference, and a living, in New York City.

Except Danny’s father was a faun, and Ellen is a storm-seer.  Which means that they bridge the line between human and fatae, between Talent and Null — and specialize in helping people who fall into the dangers between…

In The Work of Hunters, Ellen’s most recent vision strikes a memory for Danny — a memory that quickly turns deadly. Soon, they are racing the clock not only to stop a new killing, but to find justice for the long-dead.

Gilman breaks your heart in the best way possible as she revisits the Cosa Nostradamus world with charming half-faun Danny taking the lead…  [it] delights.” — C.E.Murphy, bestselling author of Shaman Rises

In honor of the new novella, the prices of the first two have been dropped to $2.50, but only on BVC! Grab 'em while they're cheap(er)!

It's true: no matter what else goes wrong in a day, having 2k brand new words now I didn't when I woke up makes it all awesome. :-)
--------

No, it wasn’t light.  Not from a candle or a flashlight or any other emergency illumination system I’d ever seen.  It was, lacking any other term, creepy as fuck, bog-orange and too dim to be useful, like one of those deep see fish you only ever see on deep water nature shows or something.  Elongated, narrow, and then it flicked out of sight not like it had been turned off but like it’d…turned sideways and was too skinny to see?

I might ignore my non-human inheritance most of the time, but when it’s howling at me, I listen.

That wasn’t someone over there, that was some thing.

Well, it took a while, but we're finding pirated copies of the Sylvan Investigation novellas. But it's not really a problem, because pirating self-published books only hurts the...oh, wait.

*snarls a little*

If you want to give a finger to pirates, and a hand-up to the creators, may I suggest stopping by Book View Cafe to do your shopping? All monies from books bought at BVC go directly a) to the author and b) to maintain the BVC co-operative.

After spending a year creating a new world and new characters for SILVER ON THE ROAD, returning to Sylvan investigations, and the world of the Cosa Nostradamus is kind of... interesting, in a shake-up-the-brain way. Because none of you have met Isobel, Matthew or Farron yet. None of you have encountered the boss, or Calls Thunder, or Graciendo - or Flatfoot, bless his pointy little head. They're still entirely mine. And that's nice, but it's also...incomplete.

But coming back to writing Danny and Ellen (and Wren, Sergei, and Pietr, yes, shhh) is less creating than catching up. Because they've already been out in the world. People have reacted to them, claimed them.  And so now I'm seeing them not only as my creations, but yours, too.  Because writer->character->reader is a chemical reaction.  It's alchemy.

You can't remove the author from the work - we created it, we shaped it, we pressed it onto the page. But you can't remove the reader, either. Not once they've gotten their fingerprints all over it.  Because that's when a book really lives - when it doesn't belong to just one person any more.

And now you kind of understand, maybe (and so do I) why every new book's release is such a traumatic moment.  Because we're waiting for that alchemy to happen.

(of course, sometimes you're going for gold and you get silver.  But sometimes you get platinum. Or gold-pressed latinum)

"Kindness, just then, made her want to break things." And - a few weeks late - the 1st chapter of WORK OF HUNTERS is happening... :-)

(if you didn't support the Kickstarter, you're going to have to waaaaaaaaaaaait to read this. But you can still pick up the first two novellas at Book View Cafe / B&N /Kobo/ Amazon, or in print form from Plus One Press)

So I woke up this morning and overnight more backers decided that yes why yes, you WOULD like some insane Cosa Nostradamus reality tv transcripts, thank you.

$8,000 reached, and gone past.

Oh dear.  You people.  You lovely, insane people.

So it's time - since there's still a full day left - to roll out the next stretch goal.

If we hit $9500... you will get two exclusive  'backstory' vignettes of two characters... as voted on by you-the-backers. I won't have a clue who I'm writing about until you tell me.

*....rethinks the wisdom of this, does it anyway*

Onward!

lagilman: coffee or die (pooh)
The next two Sylvan Investigation titles are a go. I repeat, they are a go....

*does happy meerkat dance*
Bless you all, the backer and the boosters.

And, with 48 hours to go, we still have a chance of hitting the next stretch goal, where you get to see me delve into the sordid, sordid world of Cosa Nostradamus reality television....
lagilman: coffee or die (Castiel Kitten of Thursday)
We've reached the point where, if I forget to give CatofSize his shot, he reminds me. I wouldn't have believed it, myself, and yet... there he was, sitting on the sofaback, looking at me like "hey mom, we're not done here yet!"

Huh.  Good kid.

(then I had a moment of panic, because once you've done something enough times it's hard to remember if you did or didn't do it that morning, because all the memories are exactly the same....but no, I hadn't)

Meanwhile, today the Kitten of Thursday goes in for his almost-a-year checkup.  Yes, he's been with us eight months!  I can't believe it either.
------------------------------------

and now, Your Daily Reminder (4th of 5 in a series)

We're in the final days and still a bit short of the goal...

Literally, only a bit short.  As in $485.  With 55 hours (tick, tick...) to go!

So, if you enjoyed the urban fantasy of the Cosa Nostradamus, this is how to keep it alive. Also, the opportunity to dedicate the books to yourself (or a loved one) is still available as a backer bonus!

(also, t-shirts.  And cookies!)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/980297055/sylvan-investigations-work-of-hunters-an-interrupt

and for those of you who missed the first novellas, a reminder of where you can find them:
DRM-free digital (or with DRM from Amazon, B&N or Kobo),
the omnibus print edition
audio.
lagilman: coffee or die (puppyface)
And so, we're in the final days and still a bit short of the goal...

Literally, only a bit short.  As in, under $700 $500  With a little under three days to go...

And yeah, I've finished fleshing out the outline, and have written the first scene.  Because once I start thinking about Danny and Ellen's voices, I can't not.  It's like the best kind of sickness...

So, if you enjoyed the urban fantasy of the Cosa Nostradamus, this is how to keep it alive. Also, the opportunity to dedicate the books to yourself (or a loved one) is still available as a backer bonus!

And so, we're in the final days and still a bit short of the goal... I'll be blunt: I love these stories and I want to keep writing them. But the only way I can realistically carve out enough time to write two novellas these days is to know that the bills will be paid that month. So if we want to see more Sylvan Investigations this year, this is the way it can happen.  We're so close....

(unless a patron wants to swoop in and offer me $4,000 off the bat? Yeah, I didn't think so)

Need another, genre-positive reason to support this series? This is a series with two minority characters as the leads [Danny's mixed race, Ellen is black], as befits the cultural jumble that is NYC....

lagilman: coffee or die (citron presse)
Favorite, and very telling bit of dialogue from the rough-in of WORK OF HUNTERS... (yes, I'm drafting it even though we haven't funded yet and I have no spare time, shut up, I LOVE this story, okay?)

“The Cosa is all about discrimination, Ellen. Never think it's not. You're at the top of the pole right now and I'm not. Think about that."

(Danny is a faun/human half-breed.  Ellen is human, Talent, and a Seer.  She is also black.  This is making for some...interesting scenes, considering the plot)

Also, a new dead body has appeared, who hadn't been in the outline.  Should I add it to the "make yourself die horribly" bonus level?

For those keeping track, we're at $5,300, with ten days to go. If you think that isn't given me indigestion, you don't know me very well.  C;mon, guys, let's get another thousand into the pot this week....!
lagilman: coffee or die (puppyface)
And we're at 11 days and counting, for WORK OF HUNTERS/AN INTERRUPTED CRY to fund!  C'mon, don't you want not one but TWO novellas, featuring a jaded-but-idealistic half-faun PI and his up-and-coming partner, a young human woman with unwanted, deeply annoying magical skills?  Adventure! Genre-appropriate violence!  Snark! Minority Representation! Setting fire to bits of NYC!  (ooops.  That hadn't been in the original outline.).

But only if we reach 100% funding.  In eleven days.   So check out the backer levels, see what tickles your reader-fancy....

(Because someone asked earlier, the $7,500 will cover the costs of producing the ebooks (paying the editor, the designer, and the lovely April´╗┐, who rides herd on all the admin details) and buy me the time to write these projects, rather than dancing to someone else's tune.   Oh, and pay Uncle Sam his share, because yeah, we pay taxes on all Kickstarter monies...)
lagilman: coffee or die (citron presse)
There's still about $250 to go before midnight tonight, to get the kickstarter for WORK OF HUNTERS / AN INTERRUPTED CRY to 75% (and get me to dye my hair purple). Another $2,400 in the next two weeks for us to reach 100% and get these novellas rolling.

$10 for two novellas. But if you kick in more, there are other tasty treats, including a new Cosa Nostradamus short story, t-shirts, the chance to dedicate the novella to someone (limited offering), and "blooper reel" outtakes! Oh, and cookies, for a certain few of you!

And since we caught the first blooper on page last night, I'm going to give you a taste of that....

--------
There are a whole bunch of difference silences – awkward, embarrassed, comfortable, pregnant. But there’s nothing quite like the silence of a woman in a fury.

“Ellen…”

“No. Don’t.”

Ellen’s normally what you’d call laid back. Quiet. All right, a mouse. I’d been doing my best to break her out of her shell, but this wasn’t quite what I’d been intending.

“It’s not as bad it sounds.” It was worse, actually, but I was still trying to shelter her from that fact. More fool me.

“You seriously-“ and to my shock she started to giggle.

“What?”

“I’m sorry, I just…” She sat her ass down on the desk and kept giggling, her eyes starting to water. “Your face, oh god you didn’t make that face in rehearsal and…”

I tried to fix my face, but whatever I was doing just seemed to make it worse.

“No, just… give me a minute.”

Time! C’mon, guys….

“I want it on record that I wasn’t the one who blew the scene this time.”
“Your face blew it.”
“My face is perfectly fine.”
“You looked like you swallowed a guppie!”

Children….

“She started it!”

Everyone take ten, then we’ll pick up again at the revelation. Ellen…?

“Yeah, yeah, I’m good, I just need a minute. Or three.”

Boss sounded tired. If we didn’t get this scene right, she was going to shake up the plot, kill some more people. Fuck this. Maybe there were some Danish left on the craft table…
----------------

it kinda got worse from there, so I told everyone to go to bed and we'd pick up again in the morning when I was less punchy...
lagilman: coffee or die (citron presse)
I am very boring this weekend. I stayed home and worked - except for a brief period Saturday night, when I went over for a lovely dinner at Casa DeCandido/Simms/Mazur. There are cats & a dog there, in addition to the hoomans. Came home & Kitten ofThursday sniffed me suspiciously a few times, then fixed me with a Smiting Stare...

Interesting, she has no such reaction to when I come home after a day spent with Mei-Chan. The little brat actually knows the difference between "family dog" and "non-family dog?"

I did pause in the working to snag a ticket to go see a broadcast of Coriolanus on Thursday. Yes, the production starring Tom Hiddleston and Mark Gatiss.  Mainly because I've never seen Coriolanus performed, and partially because after this cold snap I really needed an excuse to get the fuck out of the apartment/into the world.  And also because Tom Hiddleston.  I'm not shallow: I have variable depths.

CatofSize seems to be doing quite well, although we haven't had a another blood panel done yet. He's back to being playful and affectionate, rather than sulky, and is dealing with the shots and pills in his usual CatofSize manner ("are there treats? And pettinslovins? Then okay, you can do that.")

and, because it's not an update without me waving my hands about the Kickstarter...

60% funded! 18 days to go! The chance to write more Danny-and-Ellen stories is like Pop Rocks - innocent until you taste it, then all fizzy excitement. :-) But we're not there quite yet....

And the cookies are still up for grabs.  Mmmmjustsaying.

and now...back to the working thing.  Because Monday = Deadlines + New Projects....
lagilman: coffee or die (citron presse)
Yesterday I spent mostly putting out various fires. Today, I'm gathering kindling. No doubt, by Monday, I'll be putting out fires again. Somewhere in there I suppose is also carry water...

Today is Team Kornetsky, working on the revisions to Gin & Tonic #3, which will NOT be called DOGHOUSE. Unless it is. It's the perfect title, really, but the sales force thinks it's got too much resonance with "husbands in trouble." Not that any of them are projecting, at all...

*blinks innocently*

This weekend is going to be a blitz of All The Work, because I've set a deadline of Monday, Damn it, to get things off my desk.

Meanwhile, I'm noodling along on the opening scene of WORK OF HUNTERS. Have you backed the Kickstarter yet? If not - why not? Do you hate adorable hard-nosed fauns with a permit to carry? Do you have something against young women figuring out and owning their awesome shit, magical and otherwise? DO YOU HATE PUPPIES?

(or, PUPIs?)

I apologize to those who are seeing the Kickstarter reminders every day (especially if you've already become a backer). The sooner we hit 100% funding, the fewer updates I'll have to make. That's just a friendly reminder.... *g*
