lagilman: (dissent)
In case - among the visual horrors of the California fires and the abandonment of Puerto Rico, as well as the destruction of our environment for financial gain of corporations and shareholders, you missed this tidbit:

45's regime is attempting - despite there being no actual science to support it- to define life as beginning at conception.

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/10/look-at-the-junk-science-about-contraception-in-the-health-departments-new-manifesto/

Yanno, if you're going to claim religious exemptions for employers to not pay for birth control, and why abortions should be limited, then you need to either a) allow those of us whose religion ALLOWS contraception, and abortion, and protecting the health of the mother above all else - to have religiously-protected access to same, or b) admit that you're angling for a Christian theocracy, and your "freedom OF religion" really means "bow to MY religion."

In this, as in so many other bullshit ideologies being pushed by Pence et al.

Also, Trump has apparently tweeted (what else) that NBC should lose their broadcast license for, um...being critical of him, apparently.

He seems to have forgotten (or not actually listened to) part of the oath he actually took in front of a scattering of witnesses:

"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.“

Including the 1st Amendment, not just the 2nd.

In response, the National Association of Broadcasters, who actually DO know their Constitution, issued the following statement:

“The founders of our nation set as a cornerstone of our democracy the First Amendment, forever enshrining and protecting freedom of the press. It is contrary to this fundamental right for any government official to threaten the revocation of an FCC license simply because of a disagreement with the reporting of a journalist.”

And once again, the GOP is wasting time (and our per-hour tax dollars) trying to defund an organization that exists solely to ensure that women are able to afford basic and essential health care.
And their stated reasons?  To stop abortion and the selling of fetal tissue.  Except
a) Federal law already restricts PP from using federal funds to provide abortions  (the Hyde Amendment), and
b) by offering affordable contraception and reproductive care, PP actually REDUCES the chance of women having an unwanted pregnancy that would lead to an abortion,  AND
c) It is illegal to sell fetal tissue, but it IS legal for scientists obtain fetal tissue for research purposes from a variety of sources, including hospitals, nonprofit tissue banks, and, yes, in some cases, abortion clinics. Which means that tissue that would otherwise have been considered medical waste is instead used to save lives via research into currently-deadly diseases costing us millions in dollars and thousands in lives.

(and the video claiming to show that PP is somehow avoiding those laws has been exposed as a heavily-edited sham)
So why are the GOP so determined to shut down PP?  You know why.

And it's not about saving tax money. Or stopping abortions.

We were planning to hit a few bookstores in Texas in October, to support FIXED (the new mystery) and SOUL OF FIRE (the second Portals book).

Now... I really don't know what to do. Part of me - a large part - doesn't want to do anything to support that state's tourism economy, and I sure as hell don't want to be anywhere women are so disrespected by the government.

And yet. And yet. Can I say that my boycott - that any boycott - is actually going to be useful? Sometimes, it can be. Sometimes, it isn't. I need to figure out which this was.

I suppose I could donate all my royalties from that leg of the tour to Planned Parenthood?
lagilman: coffee or die (truth to power)
How about a tax on Viagra/Levitra to help pay for birth control?
lagilman: coffee or die (truth to power)
In case you haven't heard, the House has voted to bar Planned Parenthood from federal funding, putting millions of women and families at risk.

Planned Parenthood is often the only chance young women - and many older ones -- have to get any kind of care - birth control, yes. Abortions, if needed. But also cancer screenings, HIV tests, and unbiased, no-bullshit information about how to take care of themselves. It's a step that can save us money down the road in care. And yet, it has been targeted not just for cuts, but for zero funding.

For the record: NO FEDERAL FUNDS GO TO ABORTION PROCEDURES AT PLANNED PARENTHOOD.

Hell yes, I stand with Planned Parenthood. Will you? Sign the open letter to the the reps who voted for this bill -- and to the senators who still have a chance to stop it.

http://www.istandwithplannedparenthood.org/

Do it now. Stand up, and stand with Planned Parenthood.

And for those of you who need a financial reason to do the right thing - in the long run, finding/stopping a problem early the way PP does, with their advice and screenings -- has ALWAYS been more cost effective than treating it later.

I can respect no so-called "pro-life" organization that condones cold-blooded murder of an unarmed man. And on holy ground, too -- hypocrisy piled on top of hypocrisy. If you would help women in need, put down your guns and offer your hands in support. Until then, we have no ground to meet on.

WICHITA - A search is ongoing for the suspect in this morning's fatal shooting of George Tiller, the Wichita doctor who became a national lightning rod in the debate over abortion.

Tiller, 67, was shot just after 10 a.m. in the lobby of Reformation Lutheran Church at 7601 E. 13th, where he was a member of the congregation.

I now wish I'd been watching the debate. Just so I could have reached through the screen and beaten McCain into sense with my WTF mallet.

Transcript from last night, on the question of a woman's right to choose:

OBAMA: We can find some common ground, because nobody's pro-abortion. I think it's always a tragic situation. We should try to reduce these circumstances.

McCAIN: Just again, the example of the eloquence of Sen. Obama. He's [finger quote]"health for the mother."[/fingerquote] You know, that's been stretched by the pro-abortion movement in America to mean almost anything. That's the extreme pro-abortion position, quote, "health."

This... such total and absolute disregard for the very real question of a woman's health and rights is... jaw-dropping. "Extreme pro-abortion position?" WTF is that? You mean anyone who thinks that no woman should be forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term, with all the emotional, physical and, yes, financial demands bearing and raising a child puts on the mother?

Nobody is pro-abortion. Nobody.

Many of us are pro-birth control, pro- responsible sex-ed, and pro-choice-to-reproduce. And pro-Obama.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The head of the federal agency responsible for providing women with access to contraceptives and pregnancy counseling resigned unexpectedly Thursday after Medicaid officials took action against him in Massachusetts.

The Health and Human Services Department provided no details about the nature of the Massachusetts action that led to Dr. Eric Keroack's resignation.

Just five months ago, Keroack was chosen by President Bush to oversee HHS' Office of Population Affairs and its $283 million annual budget. The pick angered Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion rights groups that viewed him as opposed to birth control and comprehensive sex education. Keroack had worked for an organization that opposes contraception.

''Yesterday, Dr. Eric Keroack alerted us to an action taken against him by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Office of Medicaid. As a result of this action I accepted his resignation,'' Dr. John Agwunobi, assistant secretary for health, said in a terse statement Thursday evening.

Massachusetts Medicaid officials did not return phone calls seeking comment.

In Reversal, Wal-Mart Will Sell Contraceptive
By MICHAEL BARBARO
Published: March 4, 2006

Relenting to pressure from state government officials, Wal-Mart Stores said yesterday that it would begin carrying Plan B, an emergency contraception pill, in all of its United States pharmacies by the end of the month.

But in a move that rankled some women's groups, Wal-Mart said that it would allow pharmacists who object to filling a Plan B prescription to refer customers to another pharmacist and, in some cases, to another pharmacy....

Ron Chomiuk, vice president for Wal-Mart's pharmacy business, said in a statement yesterday that given the impending state action and the fact that Plan B was approved by the Food and Drug Administration, "we feel it is difficult to justify" not selling the drug.

Insert your own snark on their actual motivation. The full article can be found here

A PSA if you live in one of the affected states...

"In Ohio, women may lose direct access to their ob/gyns, coverage for infertility treatment, and coverage for cervical cancer screenings.

In New Hampshire, women may lose coverage for contraceptives, direct access to their ob/gyns, and coverage for maternity care.

In Tennessee, women may lose coverage for osteoporosis screenings and direct access to their ob/gyns.

Most sexually active women aged 15-44 have used birth control. But who's paying for it? If Sen. Michael Enzi (R-WY) has his
way, insurance companies in almost every state won't have to. Next week, the Senate will consider a bill introduced by Sen.
Enzi that would allow insurance companies to ignore state laws that protect patients, including laws that prohibit insurance
companies from covering some prescription drugs, but not birth control.

Urge your senator to vote against S. 1955.
http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/enzi_bill

For years many insurance plans covered prescription drugs, but refused to cover birth control pills and other prescription
contraceptives for women. Planned Parenthood spent nearly a decade convincing lawmakers in 23 states to remedy this inequity.
Sen. Enzi's bill threatens to reverse this progress by overriding state laws that protect patients, including laws that
require coverage for prescription contraceptives, cervical cancer screenings, maternity care, mental health treatment, and
dozen of other benefits guaranteed under state law.

Speak out now. If you live in an affected state, urge your senator to vote No on S. 1955.

Thank you,

Cecile Richards
President
Planned Parenthood Federation of America"

They're claiming their pharmacists are allowed to discriminate... but only regarding this one (Plan B) medication, and only on this one basis. If they're going to claim protection under civil rights statutes, don't they have to accept all the worms that come with that particular can?

Shouldn't then an employee be allowed to refuse a customer condoms, because wasting seed is against their religious teachings? Basic birth control, even if issued for reasons other than purposes sexual (hormone pills are used for a variety of treatments, not just prevention of procreation). What about AIDS medications? If you believe that it's a punishment from God for sinful ways, you should be allowed to tell them to go somewhere else for their meds, no?

As I said. Can open. Worms everywhere. Me doing all my shopping elsewhere.

I still have the legally-granted right and ability to discriminate against small-minded bigots.
