lagilman: coffee or die (I rawk)
Huh. In my defense, September was kind of a busy month for me....

SHIFTER'S DESTINY
by Anna Leonard (aka Laura Anne Gilman)

Genre: Series, Current Series Imprints, Harlequin Nocturne
RT Rating: 4 Stars (out of a possible 4 1/2)

On a quest to find his mate so he can return to his home, Josh Mustang, unicorn shifter, takes time out to help sisters Libby and Maggie Sweet escape from the men who are chasing them. The two ran away from a cult-like commune where they had lived their whole lives, because the new leader, Ray, seems to want to use young Maggie for an evil purpose. Libby is determined to protect her young sister — and Josh is just the man to help. The descriptions are particularly well done in this fast-paced love story, especially Josh and Libby’s growing attraction.

And for those of you in the UK, I just got my M&B UK edition in the mail (paperback AND the large print trade), so it should be easy enough for you to lay hands on, should you so desire...

Last night, for various reasons, I did not finally pass out and sleep until close to 3am. And so, on waking at 6, I said "sod that" and went back to sleep until 8. Which meant that my plan to be at the DMV at 8:30 came to naught. So, fine, sez I, I'll go on Thursday, and off to work I go...

Only to discover that I had no connectivity. None. Not an erg.

40 minutes on hold later, I am informed that there is a borough-wide "service interruption" and no, they have no idea when service will be restored. Thanks for nothing, Cablevision.

I am not a multitasker - I like to do one thing and then do another thing serially - but having the steady buzz of the Internet is like listening to the office around me, it takes up enough of my brainpower so that I can focus on the thing-being-done.

No email? No search engines? No war room? I find myself MORE distracted than if those things were around.

And so off to Starbucks I hie, to join every other freelancer in town (and there are a lot - the Bronx may not be as trendy as Brooklyn, but for the fiscally aware NYC freelancer, it's a great deal) in sucking down coffee and sucking down the flickering connectivity.

And in all that chaos of sorting and resettling, I almost forgot - SHIFTER'S DESTINY is out (in paperback) today! .

So, y'know, if you're looking for a fun little read about a shapeshifting unicorn, and grotesque monsters, and a young girl who can speak to animals, and a Terribly Nasty Villain, and a woman who can dream true.... this would be just your cuppa. :-)
lagilman: coffee or die (Default)
So I'm re-reading bits of SHIFTER'S DESTINY, because I wanted to check on how I'd done something (I wrote this book over a year ago, so I wasn't quite remembering correctly) and now I have the urge to 'steal' the Mustang herd for a straight fantasy story because really, these were-unicorns kind of rock.

That's the thing about putting in deep worldbuilding - it gives back as much as it takes, in effort. I now have an entire herd of shape-shifters, living in the pre-white American West, adapting over generations, losing their herd lifestyle but still maintaining a close-knit cultural and magical identity, connected to the traditional mythology while still modernizing spoiler ) so the culture can survive....

Yeah. I need to do something with that. In my copious spare time of which I have none. And inevitably someone will claim I ripped off poor Anna Leonard....

and now I have to try and get a bike ride in before a) it rains and b) the temps hit 90. Yes, again.

Mills & Boon (my UK publisher for the “Anna Leonard” books) sent me copies of THE HUNTED. Specifically, they sent me two sets each of three copies – one a digest paperback (small) one a normal paperback, and one a trade-sized “large print” edition.

I’m keeping one of each for my shelves, but that still leaves me with another set. So hey, time for a contest! If you’d like a copy (3 copies, actually) of my alter-ego’s tale of suspense, sex, and selkies on the New England coast, tell me what you’d do with the large print edition (keep it, give it to a friend who won’t admit she needs reading glasses, donate it to your Raunchy Grannies Reading Club, etc). One winner from the entries will be chosen by the Oracular Cat method.

Entries will be accepted until midnight (Eastern) on Thursday, May 19th.

EtA: for those wondering about my other Anna Leonard titles, they're all available digitally from Your Local Retailer.

When you're so busy you forget you have a new story coming out? You're kinda busy. Oy. So many thanks to Madame Editrix for the reminder that "At Your Command," a new PNR by my slightly smuttier alter ego, Anna Leonard, has gone live on the eHarlquin website as of this morning...

It's kinda sweet. It's kinda sweaty. It was fun to write and, according to my betas, is fun to read. What more can you ask of 15,000 words of girl-gets-a-genie?
lagilman: coffee or die (trouble? moi?)
And I forgot that "Anna" has a new story out 1 July: "Fire Break"

Firefighter Paul Wintershins had run into a fire to rescue someone—and died. Or so people thought....

Transformed into a fire elemental, Paul is torn between setting things ablaze and stopping dangerous fires. Lately, the temptation to burn is getting harder to resist. But when Paul is called to a malevolent inferno, a new desire takes hold of him: to rescue the beautiful woman who is a target for another's flames.

With the fire raging, their passion could be the key to Jackie's survival...and Paul's salvation.

Go on, download a little heat to help you cool off...

At a point yesterday, I decided I had consumed too much caffeine. How did I know? I could feel my blood shimmering

That? Is a very very very bad sign.

Little writing accomplished [my brain is still trying to work its way through a scene that's gotten knotted], but a metric deskload of editorial work done and dusted and invoiced, finally. And yay, just in time for the copyedit of "By Your Command" to land in my in-box, due back on the 29th...

There will be Writing today. Or maybe a movie. It's supposed to hit 90 today, which is the point at which I give up and melt.

Why yes, I am a delicate winter flower. Any other questions?

EtA: New Harlequin Romance Blog Post: Anna Leonard blogs about she made selkies sexy in THE HUNTED: http://bit.ly/aieDMl

and for those following the Cute Puppy Chronicles, we just completed first test of the in-case-of-emergency sleepover at Ch. Felidae. Mei-Chan and Boomer have come to a "okay, I don't hate it" detente of sniff-and-stare. Pandora thinks we should all go to hell.

And lo, THE HUNTED (bn.com eHarlequin)has been Klausnered.

"The Hunted is an enjoyable oceanic romantic fantasy starring two likable lead characters on the lam from some nasty sorts. The story line is fast-paced especially once Dylan leaves his haven home for his destiny. Although the premise is not new (for instance, see Melanie Jackson’s Selkie sea saga), the audience will enjoy Anna Leonard’s take on shapeshifting Selkie."

And really, my goal wasn't to break new, um, waves but to entertain. So I guess I dun did that.

And with that, the "how romantic" contest will close tomorrow (yeah, a few days late). Get your last shots in to win a copy of THE HUNTED before it's in stores...

and now I have a Box o' Books!

For those of you who like a little paranormal romance in your reading mix, I present "Anna Leonard's" newest, The Hunted

When Beth Havelock is approached by a handsome stranger on the streets of her New England home, she has no idea that he is a selkie, one of the sea-faring shapechangers. All Dylan knows is that she is the one he was sent there to find, drawn from his ocean home to the confusing, complicated world of humans.

Neither of them know that someone is watching them. Someone who wants what they have - and will not stop until they are dead.

Working on "The Rat King" (title def. to change). Interesting, the issues I thought this story was going to deal with haven't appeared yet. The issues I thought it would barely glance on? Front and center.

This is why I write, 'cause my stories surprise and enlighten me when I write 'em, too. Also, cheaper than therapy for digging out what's quietly eating at you.

Meanwhile, THE HUNTED (Anna Lenard's newest) is available for pre-order. Yes this is the selkie paranormal romance, finally hitting the stands...

(don't look at me like that, I have NO say whatsoever over these covers!)

Order via B&N

(interestingly, it's not available via eHarlequin yet, but it will be)

Okay, not quite, but it may seem that way this month, since there's Stuff going on in April.

First, all week the authors included in the MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS anthology will be blogging and giving away stuff! Here's the schedule:

April 6 - Michele Hauf
April 7 - Bonnie Vanak
April 8 - Karen Whiddon
April 9 - Lori Devoti
April 10 - Anna Leonard (that would be, yes, me.)
April 11 - Vivi Anna

Stop by their blogs all week, to see what's going on! My contest will start on the 10th, and run for 48 hours. Comment on that post, and you'll be included in a drawing to win a copy of MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS, a copy of THE NIGHT SERPENT, and -- because this is me, and I know you guys -- chocolate! And none of that Hershey's or Godiva stuff, either. :-) You don't have to guess anything or write anything more than "hi!" -- all you have to do is comment.

And now for today's contest/challenge:

Yesterday, coming back from the Park, I saw something odd: someone on the 3rd floor had put a knife block -- complete with knives! -- on the ledge outside their window.

(alas, I didn't get a picture of it, being too damn tired to rummage for my camera at that point).

So. Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to establish plausibility: why was it left there? What was the reason, the purpose, the intent? Plausibility is the important thing here: make me believe it! You have 75 words, maximum. The contest will close on Friday, and the winner will be announced next Monday, at which point another contest will be announced, every Monday until BLOOD FROM STONE is released on May 4th.

Best response to this challenge as chosen by me (ties to be broken by A Celebrity Judge) will get a copy of the new mass market edition of CURSE THE DARK. And, oh what the hell -- chocolate!

[you do not have to be a LJ member to enter/win.!]

eeee! I can haz cabinets! I can has Thing Looks Like Kitchen!

Went out this afternoon to keep friend from keeling over after Indelicate Medical Procedure, and stopped for dinner with folks (and puppy-time). Came home and ... boxes were out of living room! Fridge was out of living room! Rug was back on floor! Cabinets were all installed and fridge and dishwasher put into place!

Mind you, we're still missing a countertop, and the stove and microwave and sink have yet to be put into place, and there's no backsplash and.... But eeee! Is no longer empty echoing space!

The cats have already been All Over It.

Oh, and I haz rough draft of PACK OF LIES, too. For those who come here for the writing stuff [all six of you]. Very rough, and too short, but drafty, yes. Ending kick some serious ass, and winds up my heroine for book 3. All I have to do is whip through the second draft, add about 20,000 words, and polish it up in time for the May 1 delivery date. Nooooo problem! And am well into first chapter of MUSTANG, wherein Our Heroine has already been menaced by Sleazy Minions of Evil Guy.

Meanwhile, in the alleged Real World, things are still a mess. I'm forcing myself to follow the news, but I don't have the heart to report it here. *sighs* Oh well. There is good out there. There are places where people aren't killing each other, where they're working to solve problems, cure diseases, grow sustainable crops, and teach tolerance and moderation and acceptance. And there are kittens and puppies and chocolate. And good wine at reasonable prices. It's not all bad....
lagilman: coffee or die (midnight cravings)
in this case, copies of MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS, the novella anthology that reprints "Anna Leonard's" Dreamcatcher, previously available only as an e-book, along with stories from Michele Hauf, Karen Whiddon, Lori Devoti, Vivi Anna and Bonnie Vanak.

*looks at limited bookshelf space* Hrmmm. What to do with the bookses, what to do....

*goes off to plot with anthology-mates. watch this space for Evil Details!*

(also, I will have copies with me at Lunacon, for them as feel the urge to read six supernaturally sexy stories....)
lagilman: coffee or die (meerkat coffee)
First sale of the year: audio rights for "Blow Job Red" to podcaster SFZine. They're still pre-launch, so no idea when it will be available. Listen here for updates.

I'm starting to get antsy about my last unanswered short fiction submission from 2008. Although not superstitious as a rule, I hesitate to ping the editor, but... we're going on three months now. Antsy. Hrm. Wonder if just talking about it is enough to bring on the jinx?
------------------
I finished the outline for MUSTANG last night. This morning I get to read it over and see if there's anything important I left out, then it goes off to madame editrix so she can approve it, and start a Contract Payment in motion. Normally my outlines are more like Google map directions -- accurate until they're suddenly not, and to be read with a casual and forgiving eye. Nocturne is a little more stringent with this -- the editorial director likes to know Exactly What She's Getting. so I have to do a bit more work up-front. Things will still change in the actual writing, of course, but there tend not to be the joyfully exasperating Ah-HAH! moments of plot recognition. Pluses and minuses to that....
-----------------

I am informed that my revision notes for THE VINEART WAR should arrive in the next handful of days. I'll be in the corner, fretting. Except here's no time to fret, as I need to get back to work on PACK OF LIES See my head go 'splodey, soon...
----------------------

And in the non-writing news, this amused me, in a sad sort of way. Our Geek President. "I’m still clinging to my BlackBerry," Mr. Obama said Wednesday. "They’re going to pry it out of my hands."
lagilman: coffee or die (Default)
For your amusement, the cover of MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS, including 'Anna Leonard's "Dreamcatcher" [Amazon B&N]

It's actually pretty classy, all potential cover disasters considered. I'm pleased.
lagilman: coffee or die (Default)
Anna Leonard's novella, "Dreamcatcher" will be included in the print anthology MIDNIGHT CRAVINGS, from Nocturne (April 2009: ISBN 978-0-373-25093-6, trade format).

You can still download the story off the eHarlequin website or Other E-Pushers, if you so desire, of course...

[also, have updated the inevitably incomplete bibliography. For those of you who read straight from the page, it's the first, post-dated entry at the very top of the screen.]
lagilman: coffee or die (Default)
It's not all doom and gloom on the financial front: CURSE THE DARK (book 2) and BRING IT ON (book 3) are [finally!] being reissued as $6.99 paperbacks! Yes, I can say this with assurance because I have on my desk the solicitation covers for both books.

Numfar! Do the Dance of Mass Market Joy!

Alas, it is delayed joy, because they will not be in your hot and needy (and fiscally prudent) hands until March 2009. But you will be able to pre-order them! When? Soon! I promise. In the meanwhile, though, if you like having all your books in one format, I'd avise ordering the trade editions before they go out of print...

Meanwhile over on Smart Bitches, they point out that the male model for "Dreamcatcher" was recycled from another earlier (print) book. Before anyone faints away in horror, let me assure you that this is not uncommon in series* books (if you look at a lot of media tie-ins, you may notice that the actor/actress is simple redressed and placed in a different backdrop, courtesy of Photoshop, not that I'm naming any *coughMurderSheWrotecough* names). There's only so much budget, and model fees are expensive, while stock art is cheaper. Same goes for anthologies or backlist reissues. Plus, in my case, "Dreamcatcher" is an e-book only so the cover is really a moot point -- why hit the budget for that?

For the record, I am amused rather than po'd, and have tweaked my editor on the topic already (it's an art department/publisher thing, so all editors can do, realistically, is lodge a protest and say "toljaso" when they get busted).

That said, there's been a run of the same thing on higher-profile books, especially in the chick-lit and literary end, and apparently people are less amused by that. I understand -- I'd be seriously pissed if this happened with Luna, or Pocket. Individual titles have different expectations from series, and nobody wants to discover that their highly anticipated novel got someone else's redressed hand-me-downs....

* 'series' does not mean "related books by one author" but "books published as part of a series imprint, i.e. Nocturne." Confusing, I know.
lagilman: coffee or die (I rawk)
She -- me? We? -- has an essay up at the Paranormal Romance Blog, discussing the writing of The Night Serpent and Dreamcatcher.
