After 20+ days of fucking around and fucking me over, all hail the upper management guy who told me to call him the MOMENT I got off the plane, and who then sent out not only the guy who needed to do the work on the damaged cables, but also the installation tech, and bless them for showing up and working like a (very entertaining) well-oiled partnership to get us all hooked up.....

well, everything except the printer. The printer does not want to talk to the brand new router. But we got them to them talk to each other via manual setup.

Everyone I've been owing files to? Stand by and prepare to be boarded! (metaphorically speaking, anyway).

And now, some of that inevitable self-promotion thing we creatives are forced to do, to keep the lights on and the internet flowing...

The Neo-Noir Storybundle (of which I am part) only has 13 more days before it's gone forever! So act now to lay hands on a digital collection of ten (10!) riveting works of speculative noir fiction!

Cross boundaries and defy expectations while exploring the noir tenets. Unreliable narrator? Check. Cynical, world-weary protagonist who’s as quick with wit as a weapon? Check. Complex plots rife with reversals and betrayals? Check, check, and check. Add a dash of snark, a jigger of suspense...

And pay what you want (with the option to send some of that to charity!)

Currently in San Francisco, after a signing (and a March!) in San Diego, and then another signing, and then going to hear other people reading at SF in SF, and now a day of relaxation - where relaxation means updating Patreon with a new serial episode, answering emails and calling my representatives - before heading home tomorrow morning.

It's been a great, if whirlwind trip, and much love to Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego and Borderlands Books in San Francisco for hosting me!

(but despite host loaner cats, I miss my boys...)

Meanwhile, there are now signed copies of SILVER ON THE ROAD and THE COLD EYE at both those fine establishments, so even if you missed out on the buffalo and the cocoa and the gossip by not being there in person, you can still get a few author-defaced copies for your own....

lagilman: (Seattle Wheel)
Reminder that I'll be in California this weekend, January 21-22, reading from, and signing THE COLD EYE, at Mysterious Galaxy in San Diego at 2pm Saturday (after the March, so bring your sore feet and coffee and hang out for a while!) and Sunday in San Francisco at Borderlands Books, at 3pm!

If you can't get there in person, you can order a signed book from both of those lovely outlets - and if you order it early, you can get it personalized!

Note: for every book signed at Mysterious Galaxy on Saturday, I will be donating $2 (for hardcovers) and $1 (for trade paperbacks) to the ACLU, in honor of the Women's March.
Also: I'm gonna have a Giveaway. Or possibly Two.... ;-)

Every time a positive review comes in, a writer gets another feather in her wings.

The Cold Eye is a captivating read… Both of these novels are more than “weird Westerns,”
they create an entirely new Western mythos, one I hope to explore for many books to come.

SF/F Blog

The Cold Eye was pretty much everything I wanted it to be, plus some. I had high expectations going into this book, and I’m pleased to announce that Gilman surpassed every single one of them. If you haven’t started this series yet, why not? It’s one of the best things in the genre right now.   5/5 stars.

“Laura Anne Gilman continues to forge her own version of a Western, American myth of the very early days of a West that wasn’t, but I wish it might have been.  I daresay if you are a fan of Weird Westerns, you should already be reading Laura Anne Gilman. And if you are not, the Devil’s West novels may change your mind, too.”                 -The Skiffy and Fanty Show

Tonight is the first official signing/reading, at University Bookstore!  Even if you can’t get there in person, you can order a signed copy…

Virtually, I’m ranting about a book that pissed me off, over on Tor.com (where they changed the title to be classier)

lagilman: (Seattle Wheel)

In case you missed it: I'm at "My Favorite Bit," talking about...well, my favorite bit from THE COLD EYE!

Also, I visited Magical Words, with some advice to "Slide on the Ice."

I updated my Patreon with an enthusiastic, if pre-coffee, rendition of "On The Occasion of a Book Birthday," and the mailing list got an Advance Update on Stuff!

This week's "Dive Into Worldbuilding" skypecast has been rescheduled for NEXT Wednesday, due to our host having laryngitis.  Everyone send Juliette good-health wishes!

And this Friday, in Seattle, I'll be reading and signing THE COLD EYE at University Bookstore, starting at 7pm sharp!

More as they come along....

and updatery on the updatery!  B&N's sf/f blog just called THE COLD EYE “a captivating read” and said that the series is “more than “weird Westerns,” [but] create an entirely new Western mythos.”

excuse me while I shamelessly give you the buy link.

I started out authorial life as a horror writer. I still feel, in my darkest corners, like a horror writer (although not of the slash-and-gore variety).

The best example of my horror work (currently in print, anyway), is DRAGON VIRUS. Seven connected stories, or a linked-piece novella, however you want to consider it.

It began soon after the Millennium. Reports of newborns with strange malformations, too weak to live . . . caused by a single genetic mutation. Or, as the press quickly dubbed it, the Dragon Virus. Scientists predicted that it was an evolutionary dead end; that the mutation would burn itself out quickly; that it was nothing to be worried about.

They were wrong.

Every racial type. Almost every continent. No known cause. Human-created, maybe. Or just God, throwing the dice. Infecting us, warping us. Tied into our genetic code, from here on in. No known treatment. No idea where even to begin.

Everything was about to change.

With an introduction by Walter Jon Williams.

“Stunningly successful…A potent ride through a changing future, exploring themes and ideas that resonate as much in the modern day as in her darkly evolving future.”   —SF Signal

“A gripping adventure from start to finish, Dragon Virus is highly recommended.”  —Midwest Book Review

“What would happen if a new, genetically linked virus should spread through the world?   Laura Anne Gilman takes us on a tour of the aftermath of a change in the very nature of human society….with colorful characters and situations and an innovative slang to set the atmosphere.” —Critical Mass

I aim to land somewhere in the safe zone between that one commercial you saw once and liked but can't remember what it was about, and the OHFORFUCKSSAKEENOUGHALREADY brainwashing of Jared's Galleria.   ;-)

Have you ever wanted to immerse yourself in a series of really EPIC disasters - from a safe reading distance? Of course you have.

And the folk at Storybundle heard you....

Every time you turn on the news, you see a different possibility for how the world might end—and imminently! Climate change, Ebola, asteroid impact, nuclear war...zombie apocalypse. How will you prepare? How will you save your family? How will you help save the world for your children and future generations? Obviously, the best preparation is to read up on every possible disaster scenario. That's where The Disasters Bundle comes in.

One of our favorite curators, Kevin J. Anderson, has put together a new bundle of 11 epic disaster novels that cover the gamut of What Can Go Wrong. Think of it as 50 Shades of Doom. But these aren't just tales of disaster...but tales of heroism, persistence, ingenuity, and survival. These are truly the best things to read while you're huddled underground in your bomb shelter (or just in your living room, in the meantime)....

Pay what you think's fair - pay $15 or more, and get bonus books!  The money goes directly to the authors (with a chunk to Storybundle, so they can continue the good work).  No DRM. No tricks.

And you'll be getting one of the projects I'm most proud of - the darkly SFnal DRAGON VIRUS.

But you only have 21 days to score the bundle!

I I have been informed that there’s been a (short-time) price drop!

STAYING DEAD (book 1 of the Retrievers series) is currently 2.99 at Amazon and B&N (ebook)

CURSE THE DARK (books 2 of the Retriever series) is currently 3.99 at both retailers.

Meerkat's first novels!  A magical NYC, where the modern world has INCREASED the amount of magic in the world, not destroyed it, and the non-human fatae wander the streets alongside Nulls and Talent...

Not so much "romantic fantasy" as "caper novels with magic and relationships."

And a short, fuzzy (snarky as fuck) demon named PB.

lagilman: coffee or die (well-played)
And also 'cause I just like looking at it:

So now you REALLY want to pre-order it, right?

Book 1: SILVER ON THE ROAD - 6 October 2015

Available for pre-order now at the following fine book-shilling establishments....

Simon & Schuster / B&N / Kobo / Mysterious Galaxy / Powells / Indigo/Chapters /

Indiebound /Book Depository / Amazon / iBooks / Books-A-Million / GooglePlay

lagilman: coffee or die (I rawk)
While I was offline, Publishers Weekly singled out SILVER ON THE ROAD (as well as many other fine books, including Aliette de Bodard's THE HOUSE OF SHATTERED WINGS, which if you haven't pre-ordered you really should) as one of "this fall’s most exciting books."

Needless to say (but I'm gonna anyway): I'm chuffed.   :-)

"Gilman reworks American history and legend in her first epic fantasy novel since 2012, a richly detailed and eloquent story of magic in the Old West."

(the on-line version is subscription-only, sadly)
lagilman: coffee or die (NYC)
Well, no, I'm currently in the city - NYC to be exact - and thence on to Boston, for Family-Related Celebrations And Stuff.

Also: under deadlines.

Content and Connectivity will be variable for a while.

Meanwhile - have you ordered your copy of CLAWED yet?

Have you pre-ordered your copy of SILVER ON THE ROAD yet?

Have you caught up with the first two Sylvan Investigation novellas, before the 3rd one comes out?

/obligatory promotional memo, cause the kittens need their kibble
lagilman: coffee or die (citron presse)
okay, since I have the unexpected cost of the boarding fee to pay for, time to do the semi-occasional self-shilling thing....

Like urban fantasy?  Check out the Cosa Nostradamus books, starting with STAYING DEAD for capers, or HARD MAGIC for forensic magic, or MILES TO GO for half-fatae PIs!
Like epic fantasy?  Multi-national adventures? Or the idea of wine-based magics?  Check out the Nebula Award-nominated VINEART WAR trilogy!

More in the mood for something mysterious?  Check out L.A. Kornetsky....
And if you've already read these and liked them, consider giving the author a belated birthday gift, and posting a review on Amazon, B&N, or Goodreads.... because word of mouth does more good for a writer than this sort of shilling-to-the-already-here!  :-)
lagilman: coffee or die (citron presse)
How To Adult (a YouTube edutainment channel affiliated with John Green) just reblogged one of my "adulting" comments over on Tumblr. And it kinda exploded.... (over 100 reblogs in under ten minutes, a month after it was originally posted, and still going).  So one assumes that considerably more than a hundred people just saw it....

Dear Mr. Green: I have these books over here, they're not officially YA, but if you or your team would like to mention them positively somewhere public, that would be swell....
lagilman: coffee or die (citron presse)

Today, no matter how I try to deny it, is March 1st.  That means my month of focusing-only-on-the-fantasy is over, and I now must not only pick up  the yoke of the 4th Gin & Tonic book (which will be fun, so not too much grumbling) but also put the editorial hat back on.  Which is...not AS much fun, right now.  One of the pleasures of freelance editing is that I can say "no, I can't right now" when I'm not up to it.  But the current project was agreed-to months ago, so...

(and there's a project coming up later in the year that I'm really looking forward to, so there's that)

Anyway, speaking of books, I'm reminded (because apparently I need reminding, I am such a crap self-promoter) that you can acquire many of my books for your e-reader via Book View Café  and also via B&N, Amazon, and Kobo.

(I encourage BVC, as it's writer-run, and DRM-free)

If you're more of a print person, well, you know where to buy those, but also remember our Small Press Sponsor - Plus One Press.

and for those of you who're more into listening to your storytelling than reading, Audible has your ears covered.  :-)

lagilman: coffee or die (editor kitteh)
Cat of Size went in to the vet yesterday, to have his blood glucose levels checked (and a few other things while he was on the lift).  Huh. I've already paid more in vet bills this year than I did in human and feline medical bills in 2013. S'pose I should shill the books some more...?

First and foremost:

The Kickstarter: we're trying to fund two more novellas featuring Danny Hendrickson, a half-faun ex-cop PI who specializes in helping those who get caught in the dangerous cracks between the magical world and the Nulls.  He works/trains a young human Talent named Ellen, who spent most of her life being told magic wasn't real/she was insane.  If you like urban fantasy, if you like PI fantasy, if you want to see more minority characters in fantasy, you might want to check it out.  But quickly - there are only 7 days left to make this happen!

Sylvan Investigations: The first two novellas introducing Danny and Ellen.  You can get them in DRM-free digital (or with DRM from Amazon, B&N or Kobo), the omnibus print edition, or audio.

Dragon Virus:  interconnected stories following the path of humanity as it - slowly, often painfully, sometimes beautifully - evolves.  Not my first foray into SF, but the one I'm most proud of.  You can find it in DRM-free digital, limited edition hardcover, or audio.

“Stunningly successful…(DRAGON VIRUS is) a potent ride through a changing future, exploring themes and ideas that resonate as much in the modern day as in her darkly evolving future.”  - SF Signal

The Portals Duology:  what happens when I'm challenged to write urban fantasy without a mystery.  You get nasty elves, easily-irritated werewolves, self-aware homicidal kelpies, and two mortals in over their heads and doing their damndest to learn how to swim before they drown....  oh, and me once agin subverting the romance tropes.  Because apparently that's what I do...

“[Readers] will be seduced and enthralled by Gilman’s metaphysical thriller about wicked elves, shape-shifting supernaturals and portals to another dimension….melds magic with mayhem for a tale of bravery, friendship and devotion.” – Publishers Weekly

The Cosa Nostradamus backlist, including the entire Retrievers series (6 books) and the Paranormal Scene Investigations (4 books).

The Vineart War: My Nebula-nominated epic fantasy trilogy, with (no false modesty) a particularly unique magic system, a multinational cast of characters, and an epic battle without armies.  Oh, and a dragon. Because dragons.

and if you're in the mood for something different, check out L.A. Kornetsky's mystery series, set in Seattle, featuring two hapless humans and their slightly more with-it companions...
lagilman: coffee or die (evil laugh)
Because I've once again been reminded that people need reminders....

If you're curious about my work, or think there might be a book you haven't picked up yet, or are pretty sure you whoops! forgot to pick up one of my digital-only releases in the past 12 months.... I've collected ALL THE INFO into one convenience place for your browsing pleasure.

Or, if you're so inclined, you can go directly to the BUY HERE links....  (including audiobooks and digital-only sources)
