The Fall

Okay, I'm sure SOMEONE told me about The Fall, and I put it out of my mind because hey, UK show and I'm in the States (without cable).  But now it's on Netflix and I am watching the HELL out of this.

And not just because of Gillian Anderson.  Okay, maybe a lot because of Gillian Anderson.

Because she can still do "why are you wasting my time being stupid?" expressions better than nearly anyone.

But seriously, this is crime drama that's spooky and atmospheric and drawn-out in all the best ways, while still making you curl up on the sofa already hurting for people who're gonna hurt...

Oh, and the villain?  Creeeeeeepy, particularly when he's not being creepy.  He also has one of the best lines in the first ep.  *shudders*

Fair warning to all my friends and co-workers: I will be useless Tuesday nights/Wednesday mornings next fall...

(8pm: S.H.I.E.L.D.  9pm: Supernatural. 10pm: Person of Interest.  11pm: weeping and drinking and interneting.)

Tuesday2

I haven't been this traumatized by a weeknight lineup since the late 1970's.

Unlike PoI, I was moved to write down my reactions to S8e25 of Supernatural, "Sacrifice."

I suspect PoI didn't get that treatment from me not because it wasn't well done (I described it elsewhere as "LeCarre meets Clancy, only prettier") but because I don't feel as 'invited in' with that show - I watch and I enjoy and I occasionally flail and meta the storytelling, but it's not quite the same sandbox feel.

Supernatural is not only an open-to-all sandbox, it hands you a shovel and a pail as you come in...

(for purposes of comparison, Leverage was a sandbox, no shovel/pail.  X-Files, way back when, was a sandbox with pail, shovel, and special castle-making tools...)

Work work walking craft fair mother's day brunch walking lots of walking more work. That was Sunday. Lots of fun, not exactly blog-fodder.

However.

For them as already get it, and those who've been wondering about it, a fannish summary of Supernatural.

Discussing fandom and spoilers/speculation in the workroom today (because nothing gets writers to talking like avoiding deadlines). And I mentioned that the advantage to having been in (US) fandom for a long time is that if you scrape away the debris coating my battered, bitter heart, you will find 4 words carved in it: ”Trust Joss. Joss Lies.”

(also: “Oh, screw you, Chris Carter.” But that’s another pain for another time)

Some of you are laughing (and wincing) right about now. For the rest of you, this means: it’s a roller coaster. An evil bastard of a roller coaster. While you’re standing in line, enjoy the fic, enjoy the meta, enjoy the fandom what-iffery. Then let it all go: just strap yourself in, drop the safety bar, and prepare to scream. Because whatever happens, it’s gonna happen ugly, and they’re probably going to make you LIKE it.

We knew that when we bought the damn ticket. And then got back in line again.

[I am told that, for those of you a few years older, Blake’s 7 served this purpose. Y/N?]

BOOM.

Sometimes, you sort of muddle along and figure out a character as you go.  And sometimes, it hits you like a clue-by-four, right between the eyes.

Working on [project name redacted] yesterday, I took a Tumblr break to rest my brain, and was handed the visual* that will be [character name redacted] for my entire damned life. BOOM.  In that instant - seeing what that character was going through, and how it refracted through what I'd been working on - I understood things about my character I hadn't realized I knew until then.

So, y'see, it's all work-related.  Eventually.  Everything goes into the brain and gets crunched and comes out as Story.  We can't help it.

*an unusual moment for that character on that show.  So it was in the back of my head but more dormant than not.

Deadlines are chewing on my ankles, they're doing construction work the floor below me, and I need to flee to the offsite office soon.

...and I am once again deleting "you're WRONG on the Interent" responses before I post them. Because people don't want facts, they want Injured Righteousness, and I'm out of fucks to give for their speshul snowflakeness.

Instead, let me give you something Absolutely Fabulous. Ok, it may be less AbFab if you don't watch Supernatural, but trust me, it's still both funny and pretty.

.

Because Fandom is obsessive, compulsive, and AWESOME.

1) Did you see my happy cover reveals for HEART OF BRIAR and SOUL OF FIRE?  If not, checkit! http://www.lauraannegilman.net/first-look-heart-of-briar-and-soul-of-fire/

2) The Skiffy Internet is in an uproar because some white male readers got ewwwww!cooties from all the females and non-whites (and non-white females!) on the Nebula ballot.  All I can say is: cootie-fearing fandom, grow the FUCK up already. And if you can't, then stay in your own cootie-free playpens and leave the adults alone.  Sometimes there are more guys than women on the ballot(s).  Sometimes there are more women than men. Genders and nationalities and skin tones shift.  This?  Is all GOOD. It means we have a vibrant and expanding genre with lots of good work to choose from.  If you think this is something to moan about, please see above re: playpens.

3. There are a lot of new books out from Book View Cafe this week! Go checkit.

4. 2013, in addition to being the year of Being Really Damn Busy, is also the year I let myself work ALL the hours... M-F.  And very few hours S-S.  So far, this is... working extremely well. Workaholicism With Limits.  It's the hot new religion cult philosophy.

Status Report:

Today I: wrote 2k words. Edited someone else's story. Signed on for a long-term freelance project. Mended a coat.

All four of those things filled me with the same level of competent accomplishment. Or accomplished competence. Whatever.

The daily darling:

The boss never forbade them anything stronger, but Marie frowned on the girls drinking while they were working, saying men could make themselves foolish, but a woman never should.

The meerkat is recuperating.  Slowly, but steadily. Also: writing.  Which is the best recovery-therapy of all.

Tonight, there's an unseasonably warm, wet and windy night gathering force outside.  I've tucked in the cats and pulled up the covers (or was that pulled up the cats and...) but I figured I'd leave you with this:

The One Cake

Because geeks really do rule.

Some of the amusements and thinky-things I've been linking to elsewhere, in one place for your clicking.

No, you're not a geek if you recognize these characters. That just means you're reasonably adept at the culture. You're a geek if you immediately start arguing over the placement of most, and discussing who would have been better in that slot...

io9 explains why I was tweet-flailing Thursday night... RT @io9 Person of Interest delivers a dark, weird, soon-to-be-cult-favorite ep http://on.io9.com/a77a7OX God, I love that show. A lot. With Leverage gone, it's my only "I need to see the new ep!" show currently airing.

Wonder what "zero tolerance" means? This might help explain it. http://www.upworthy.com/racist-chanting-at-a-professional-soccer-player-causes-something-awesome-to-happ?c=cp2

and, if you were hiding under a rock and issed it: The Geek-in-Chief approved this message.... http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/the-white-house-response-to-the-death-star-petitio

(some friends have taken offense at a warmongering etc government having a sense of humor, however geeky. I prefer to think of this as a pro-ISS campaign, and heartily approve.)
