Portland - Five novels written by writers from the Pacific Northwest are finalists for the 18th annual Endeavour Award.  The finalists were announced at Westercon over the Independence Day weekend.  The Award comes with an honorarium of $1,000.00.  The winner will be announced November 18, 2016, at OryCon, Oregon's primary science fiction convention.

The finalists are:
"Edge of Dark" by Kirkland, WA, writer Brenda Cooper, Pyr Books;
"Irona 700" by Victoria, BC, writer Dave Duncan, Open Road Integrated Media;
"The Price of Valor" by Bothell, WA, writer Django Wexler, Roc Books;
"Silver on the Road" by Seattle, WA, writer Laura Anne Gilman, Saga Press;
"Tracker" by Spokane, WA, writer C.J. Cherryh, Daw Books.

The Endeavour Award honors a distinguished science fiction or fantasy book, either a novel or a single-author collection, created by a writer living in the Pacific Northwest.  All entries are read and scored by seven readers randomly selected from a panel of preliminary readers.  The five highest scoring books then go to three final judges, who are all professional writers or editors from outside of the Pacific Northwest.

JUDGES
The judges for the 2016 Award are Jack McDevitt, Michaela Roessner, and Gordon Van Gelder.

The Endeavour Award is sponsored by Oregon Science Fiction Conventions, Inc. (OSFCI), a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.

I am reminded (okay, I was hit over the head and shoved out the door with it) that despite Locus having ignored SILVER ON THE ROAD for their "Recommended" list, you can still write it in, if you thought it was worth mentioning...

(because if I'm not going to stand up for my own work, etc etc, right? Or so the hit-and-shove have reminded me...)

Hugo Nominations are open!

You are eligible to nominate if you have an attending or supporting membership for MidAmeriConII (the 2016 WorldCon), Sasquan (the 2015 Worldcon), or Worldcon 75 (the 2017 Worldcon) by January 31, 2015. The nomination period closes March 31, 2016 at at 11:59pm Pacific Daylight Time.

and yes, SILVER ON THE ROAD, despite being fantastical, is eligible for a Hugo.

*goes off to make my own nominations of other peoples' books*

The one thing I will say about the Hugo kerfuffle is that it's becoming glaringly obvious who in our field is an asshole without couth or manners, and who is a decent human being with social skills.

And that there are a sampling of both all along the political-opinion spectrum (although more of the really uncouth behavior documented seems to come from the far right, which is why they also come across as being the most scared).

For those wondering, my reaction to the Hugo ballot was "well, that's...interesting."

(if you weren't wondering: good for you.)

Anything more than that, you can go read Jim C. Hines' "10 Thoughts on the Hugos," and pretty much hear me say "yeah, that."
Except I will say that the Hugos, as much as we make of them, and no matter how nice it might be to win one, are not the depth and breadth of the genre, and in fact reflect only one small subset of the convention-attending section of the genre (which is already a small subset). Spending any amount of time, energy or money to manipulate the voting seems - to me - to be an amazing waste of that time, energy, and money, proving nothing.

Nice weather and occasional walks, broken up by an Unexpected Vet Visit (CatofSize now has painkillers for his knee, and we'll revisit the possibility of x-rays next week, if he's not healed by then) and Digestive Discomfort, aka "LAG spent much of the weekend on the sofa bitching about her internal organs."

Which means I'm behind on both writing and editing. Argh. This week is going to have to kick into high gear, and then some, no matter what my body wants.

Meanwhile, I managed - by dint of sleeping through a lot of it - to miss most of the noise about the Hugo nominations. But yes, congrats to the Hugo nominees who earned their reader-acclaim! I'm not going to single anyone out because I have a lot of friends on the list and I'll doubtless forget someone, but I cheered each and every one of you... and no, I'm not a voting member so yes I CAN say I'm rooting for you all!

So, The Million Writers Award nominations have opened for the stories (of 1,000+ words) which appeared online in 2012.  The editors are limited to three nominations, but YOU  can make your reader-nominations here.

For your consideration:

The Cost

A young bodyguard and her charge differ on the payment required to save a kingdom.

Mad Cats and Englishmen

A pirate ship, a sea-serpent, and a mid-life crisis.  Nobody ever listens to the cat.  (nowhere near as cracky as it sounds)

Dance

We move around destiny, around fate, around love, and never admit we don't know the steps....

For my fellow SFWAns:

I have two things that came out in 2011 that I think are worth Nebula nomination:

The Shattered Vine (Vineart War # 3) and "Crossroads" (Fantasy Magazine, 8/11 - link attached to the story)

If you've read either, and think they're worthy too, you have until the 15th of February to nominate.

(don't worry, I'll never ask)
