Because you only, please the Universe, turn 40 once:

the planned menu for Sunday's brunch
(assuming the farmer's market has everything I need tomorrow, and subject to alst-minute amendments/changes)

souffle foie gras du canard with carmelized pear
tomato and goat cheese rounds
salmon mousse on toasts
prosciutto, lettuce & cream cheese rolls
chimichurri beef skewers
salad skewers
mini corn quiches
breads and bagels
dried fruit enrobed in chocolate
mini cheesecakes

iced tea
kir royales
mimosas
oj

The salmon has been poached in white wine (as have I), and set to cool. Tomorrow morning I will make it mousse-y, then marinate the beef and make the cheesecakes. Everything else can wait until Sunday morning, when I will discover if the Improvisational Chef's ability matches her plans WRT the foie gras....

Pity we can't be in the same place to celebrate the magic 4-0 together-- I could add to the foodie paradise by producing nosh from the Latin/Caribe end of the spectrum.

You had me at foie gras.

Cholesterol and PETA be damned. If I'm going to hell for eating that stuff, carve out my niche on the Third Circle now.

Joy to you, and merriment, and much love. Please have a kir royale for me. Or get one of my other children to do so.

... kinda sucks that you're making your own birthday dinner... course I'm spoiled, and though I'm an okay cook my mother is much better... so maybe i just don't get it...

Happy early 40th though, and enjoy your tasty-sounding dinner!

But…but…but… I didn't get my invitation. Only kidding. Anyway, you're doing foie gras and as a veggie type person, I can't do that or salmon either. In any case, I didn't realize you were about to hit the big 4-0. I thought you were mid 30's. Live and learn. Joyeux Anniversaire.

dried fruit enrobed in chocolate

I love it. It's not dipped, it's not covered, it's "enrobed." That sounds so... decadent!

Two words: food porn.

Oh it sounds like a lovely meal. Have much fun.

I am sorry that the 30 year old plan didn't work out.
But ten years later you know better. As my mother used
to say, "You make your own damned fun".

Being a little bit further on the path all I can say is that
it only gets better.

Happy B Day!

I'm going through the last two days of LJ posts backwards (which is why your birthda greetings from a later post received a comment before my comment to this post). Right now Valerie and I are lying about our hotel room at the Sunshine City Prince Hotel, recovering from a morning of wandering and shopping. I just read her your plans for your brunch, and (speaking as Chef Valerie) she wanted me to say your "menu rocks." High praise indeed. She offers her services if you have any preparation questions, but the odds of her actually getting your email and being able to respond in a useful span are in lottery ticket range. Still, the offer's there.
