Regarding the whole "webscab" Scalzi vs. Hendrix thing currently flooding across the blogosphere?
I'm recusing myself from this particular mudslinging, for the very simple reason that I firmly believe that everyone's got the right to make their own damn decisions about their own damn career path.
Me? I sell my work, that's how I make my living. I will gleefully wring the last penny out of everything I write, and defend my copyright unto death and a reasonable span of years thereafter.
I will also gleefully lead new readers intosin paradise with free samples, as I see appropriate and my publisher allows. And if I feel the urge to sell something to a market that does not pay as much as another might, be it for reasons of egoboo, friendship, contrariness, or sheer stupidity? That's my damn choice.
And it's yours, too. Don't let anyone else's yelling make you think you're wrong. You might be. You might not be. It's YOUR comfort level and career plans that matter.
(I may choose to disagree with you, but so what?)
EtA: and my opinion of Howard's opinions of blogs and e-whatnot is probably quite evident....

So glad I never joined SFWA. So very very glad.

Date: 2007-04-27 05:09 pm (UTC)Hm. Looks like part of SFWA's ongoing delusion that they have any effect whatsoever on what its members are paid. I've been a member of an actor's union, and know it takes more than stating what one thinks are "professional" word rates to have any effect on those rates. Meanwhile, I've got two short stories and several first chapters of my novels up on my website, and they will stay there until I have reason to take them down. SFWA has never offered me anything but a bill for dues.
