we're melting, we're meeeelting!

I have a headache and masive amounts of work, and am feeling very very random (although more productive than yesterday, thank god). Went out around midday and the snowbanks of this morning are the mid-street rivers of this afternoon. Must be the fifth season of New England: Thaw.
For amusement value: I ran across the phrase "social caterpillar" (courtesy of Harry Turtledove) and fell in love, because yes, so very very true.

In other news, woke up to this delightful tidbit:

"It was a close call for a convenience store manager working the overnight shift. He found himself staring down the barrel of a gun this morning at the store where he works in New Haven...Surveillance video shows a frightening encounter at a New Haven convenience store. A masked gunman bust into the Shell station store at 1:00 a.m., demanding money."
That happens to be the gas station around the corner from me. I went to bed last night around 12:30.
I don't care. I still like my neighborhood (D, don't be scared off!). Just nobody tell my mom....

Date: 2007-03-20 07:37 pm (UTC)I lived in a duplex in one of the priciest zip codes in town, and found out that there was a rapist hitting up the apartments several streets down.
Did not tell my mom, either. But only walked places in the daytime. Austin has sucky lighting in the neighborhoods.
However...the big ticket scares may go straight to national news. My mother called in a panic when she heard that a woman's body had been dumped in the parking lot behind a small church. It was probably four miles from my house, an area I never went (and the killer was probably from another area) but when your daughter lives in "Hurst" (a mere burg alongside Dallas and Ft. Worth) the mention of female violent death and zip code does grab the attention.
See, I hadn't heard about it yet. Started taking the newspaper after that. Local paper or feed very important...

Date: 2007-03-21 12:19 pm (UTC)A social caterpillar, therefore, is far more of a homebody, willing to crawl slowly, and mostly stay confined to a particular set of leaves, and does in fact feel distress if suddenly launched into the air or forced to flit.
Of course, there's also the social chrysallis, in which the individual closes his/herself off and just wants to be left alone (see: 'eeeee! people!' choice). I know a number of those....
