weekend recap
Dec. 4th, 2006 08:01 pmSaturday started out badly, due to a combination of exhaustion, headache, nerves and stupidity on the part of several players. By the end of the day I had been soothed by a lovely dinner with
arcaedia, a few thousand words written on the current project, and snuggles with the felines, who don't like it when momma's upset.
Sunday started better, with more work accomplished, this time on the copyedit for BURNING BRIDGES, and a fan letter from a friend who had just finished reading STAYING DEAD. Then down into Manhattan to hang with the folks, prior to Monday's Gig (about which more later). We walked over to Central Park, hit a crafts baazar, bought holiday cards, and sat around watching the Giants game. More work on the copyedit, and some year-end rejiggering of the financials (wheee), then salmon and sweet potato for dinner, and The Librarian2.
Ah, The Librarian. How lovely to see him again. Although the second movie, inevitably, lacks some of the delightful sense of discovery of the first one, it was still... well, let's face it, it was good clean squeeeing smart and smartly-done fannish fun. But not enough Bob.
Yes, every bit was lifted from another source. Your point? All chocolate mousse recipes have the same ingredients, more or less, too...
And I've hooked my folks on it -- "Well, there's Jane Curtin. And Bob Newhart. And Olympia Dukakis.. hey, that was MY spot on the sofa!" Ten minutes in, they were sitting on front of the tv, enthralled, and my dad was gving Flynn advice ("You don't want to go in there..."). I think I know what I'm getting them for Chanukkah....
Oh, and watching movies in High Def? Totally kicks.
Monday morning I rolled out of bed at the ungodly hour of early, and jostled wth the wage slaves on the subway on my way down to the West Village and the Little Red School House, where -- wearing my YA author hat -- I had been nvited to speak during their annual book fair. At 9am. Oy.
I was nervous as hell -- fourth graders? Tough damn audience! -- but we all seemed to click, and the kids not only enjoyed the reading (4th graders do NOT pretend interest just to be polite, bless them) and asked some really great questions. Afterward the parent-guide who had been assigned to me informed me that I had totally rocked the house, keeping even the known attention-impaired kids focused for a full 45 minutes. She said something about my being "honest" and "funny" and "not stuffy."
Imagine that. *grin* Yay me. :-)
Afterward, did the last bits of work on the copyedit while treating myself to the annual gingerbread latte at Starbucks (and eavesdropping on a conversation between two lawyers discussing cases involving cops -- v. interestng stuff), before lunch with Madame Editrx. I handed over the copyedit, got chocolate (the two were not related but should have been), looked at covers for various folk, includng some non-Lunas (Mindy, Maria, etc), and then off to fooooood and discussion of things current (pun intended), pending, and future.
A few Necessary Errands, and then home, home, home. For about ten minutes, before I was off again to Monday Night Happy Hour, mainly to drop off my offering for the Toys for Tots drive. I'd missed the last few HHs due to travel and illness, so it was nice to get to see folk again, at least for a little while. But the felines were waiting back home, and not even $5 mojitos can compete with that.
Beside, I feel this intense urge to fall over.

And they were asking things like "what's the difference between a chapter book and a kid book" and "do you get to draw the covers yourself?" [which made me laugh. hard], and -- my favorite -- "do you get to keep your first draft?" Apparently there were some arguments with Teacher over revisions, earlier in the year. I had to break it to them theat nope, my first drafts are not what gets printed. Sorry, kids.

Date: 2006-12-05 02:10 pm (UTC)I saw two sketches, actually, using two slightly different poses and colors, which they were going to use for the basis of a third try, combining elements of both. FWIW, I liked what I saw...
