Wow. Hell of a game. And anyone else catch Zindane's head-butt?* I don't care what the other player said about his momma, that is NOT the way you want to end a two-decade career.

Considering Italy just won on penalty kicks after they ran out of overtime, he's going to have to do some significant fast-talking once he gets home. Assuming they let him go home.


I feel the urge to open one of my Barolos. :-)

I loved the commentator's remarks, referring to both the trash-talker and the head-butter, that their respective fans were going to want to "eat them alive" for behaving like that during such an important game.

(I always try to watch soccer with Spanish-language commentary. The American English-language commentary always sounds so restrained and subdued, like they're watching an NFL game instead of World Cup.)

Not that I had a huge interest in either team, but I'm furious with Zidane, who was the only reason I was watching. I've adored him for years.

WHAT a stupid way to end a superb career. I mean, crikey, Z, you're worth, what, eighty five jillion Euros? Hire someone to take the stroppy testotype out behind the Arc de Triomphe and beat the stuffing out of him, but a meltdown in OT during the Cup final?

Deeply disappointed. Not in the score - in the bahviour.

Until the head-butt, I wanted Les Bleus to win. Afterwards, I really didn't care. I was so disgusted. What an unneccessary way to end a brilliant career. All that whistling in the stands--if it was the French fans, then they're idiots too. That red card was absolutely warranted.

We went to Mike-the-former-house-owner's place after the game, and on the way up rte 23 we saw many, MANY cars with people hanging out windows flapping Italian flags. Much happy honking.
