I haven't been able to properly celebrate Halloween in a long time, due to WFC, and it's not the same holiday it was when I was a kid, anyway (shall save y'all the rant about 'when I was a kid, we...'). But I still fondly remember the great work-up to the actual day, crafting and creating the Best Possible Costume, and hoping against hope that the weather would co-operate...

So what was everyone's favorite-ever costume? (Convention Masquerades don't count, sorry Terri)

I have two -- in high school, a group of us went as gangsters and gun molls. I got an old suit from someone's dad, a slim-line chalk stripe, added my own fedora, and used the gangster-traditional violin case (sans violin) to hold out candy-loot. We kicked some candy-collecting ass, we did.

In the 'solo' category, my punk unicorn outfit (some of you may remember a more mild version from the Hartford AIDS Walk some years back). White bodysuit, black leather boots, white mane with a purple streak added, purple-black horn with a horn-ring, black leather finger-gloves and various other accessories.

my least-favorite was in college, going as a Cat-from-"Cats." The costume was lovely (a tabby-patterned leotard and tights, and had a friend in theater arts do my makeup) but the skin-unhappy aftermath from said makeup made it not a good memory. Skin is sensitive. Skin must be coddled. Skin does not think theatrical makeup=coddling. Lesson learned.

And the quiz --

You Are a Little Scary

You've got a nice edge to you. Use it.

Hmmm. My favorite was probably when I went as Darth Vader in a milk ad. Wore a Darth Vader mask with a white milk mustache painted on, carried around a glass of milk, and had a sign around my neck that read like a parody of those ads. Can't remember the exact wording, now -- it ended with something like, "Because the Dark Side of the Force is powerful, but low in calcium."

Worst was the year I went as Miss Parker from The Pretender -- I used that hair spray paint on a wig, and all it succeeded in doing was getting shit all over my face and clothes. Bah.

I'm disappointed I didn't get to go to the party I was supposed to go to last night -- my plan was to wear a Bush/Cheney pin, carry a Bible, and wear devil horns (left over from the NAL Hell year), and go as a Republican. *eg*

My favorite costume as a kid was Beanie from Cecil and Beanie. It had a mask with blond hair, a beanie with a propeller on top. I was probably about 5.

My favorite costume as an adult was when I was 8 months pregnant with Mandy and I dressed up as a hobo while John was dressed up as a hooker for a party at the seminary. I even permed his hair. The comments we got.

My favorite costume as a kid was the headless horeseman. I had shoulder pads and a cloak piled high to hide my head. No horse, I'm afraid. And of course, the only candy bag I could bring was a pillowcase. In my neighborhood, you had to have to case wrapped around your hand or other kids would steal it.

My favorite as an adult was this getup I used to do with spirit gum toilet paper and stage makeup. I didn't do parties, but I did scare the kids who came to our door. After a couple years, I was (in)famous for it. Kids on our block would come up to me in September, asking me if I was going to do the scary face again.

Of course, that's back when kids went from house to house. It's all different now.

My favorite costume in school was from my junior year in high school. I was able to alter some cheap werewolf ears into delicate Elven ears with the use of spirit gum and some greasepaint. With the use of some garb and accessories, I was able to become a rather luscious Elven lass.

For my adult costume, last year's pirate costume was my favorite. Yarr! I made some red and white striped bloomers, a thigh length chemise, and added a bodice, knee boots, feathered hat, and a shoulder dragon. I got lots of compliments from the teenagers and the parents, especially since I spoke with a pirate-y parlance. It was too much fun!

Best Costume

I've always been a Halloween fanatic, so I've had lot so fun/terrific costumes over the years. If I had to pick just one, it would be the year I was The Tin Man, my wife was The Scarecrow, Austin (all of 2-years-old at the time) was The Cowardly Lion, and Christina (3) was Dorothy. Our costumes looked so good, we had people stopping us in the street, and hanging out of windows to take pictures. Great fun.

Today, I'm supposed to be Little John to Austin's Robin Hood (NO, I AM NOT WEARING TIGHTS!) Christina will be a witch.

Hope everyone has fun.
