Not as excited as I was to hear about Spamalot, but still, anticipating with no little fear how wonderful (or horrible) it all might be...

Yes, it’s true: The Princess Bride is coming to Broadway. And there will be singing involved.

Composer Adam Guettel suggested an adaptation of the film might be in the works at this year’s Tonys, when he described his next effort as one involving “a lot of swordfighting,” but it wasn’t officially confirmed until recently. Guettel will collaborate with screenwriter William Goldman on the project, which so far is only in the planning stages. Though musical versions of hit films aren’t exactly guaranteed successes, this might be one it's ok to get excited about. Goldman not only authored both The Princess Bride’s screenplay and the novel on which it was based, but also was the hand behind such masterpieces as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President’s Men, and The Ghost and the Darkness (Ok, maybe one is more guilty pleasure than masterpiece. Fine.), so we can at least assume that the writing will be sharp. Plus, it’s fun to think about the possibility of things like "The R.O.U.S. Tango" and "(Sing a Song of) The Dread Pirate Roberts."

All right everyone, start making your casting suggestions now...

John Barrowman as Inigo. Please oh please oh please. If we don't get him on DW for another year, he should be Inigo!

The name Hugh Jackman has surfaced for Inigo

O!M!G! That alone would make me forgive them for using a classic movie for a musical, which I'm getting a little tired of.

*swwoooooon*

Personally I think he'd steal the show way too damn much. Although the thought of him as Humperdink...

"I have my country's 200th anniversary to plan, an invasion to schedule, my wife to kill, and Guilder to blame for it. I'm swamped!" *much giggling*

*collapses into giggles*

Right there with ya. :>

Couldn't we have Mandy Patimkin back? Is he too old now? At least he can sing.

Kristin Chenoweth. Brilliant in Wicked, even more so on The West Wing.

If Hugh Jackman is in this, [personal profile] terri_osborne will be overcome with joy.

That's who I meant. Didn't she win a Tony?

Thank you for letting me know about this! One of my favorite books, one of my favorite movies, and now it's going to be a musical? This is just beyond cool!
