Not as excited as I was to hear about Spamalot, but still, anticipating with no little fear how wonderful (or horrible) it all might be...

Yes, it’s true: The Princess Bride is coming to Broadway. And there will be singing involved.

Composer Adam Guettel suggested an adaptation of the film might be in the works at this year’s Tonys, when he described his next effort as one involving “a lot of swordfighting,” but it wasn’t officially confirmed until recently. Guettel will collaborate with screenwriter William Goldman on the project, which so far is only in the planning stages. Though musical versions of hit films aren’t exactly guaranteed successes, this might be one it's ok to get excited about. Goldman not only authored both The Princess Bride’s screenplay and the novel on which it was based, but also was the hand behind such masterpieces as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, All the President’s Men, and The Ghost and the Darkness (Ok, maybe one is more guilty pleasure than masterpiece. Fine.), so we can at least assume that the writing will be sharp. Plus, it’s fun to think about the possibility of things like "The R.O.U.S. Tango" and "(Sing a Song of) The Dread Pirate Roberts."
