an open letter to Robin Hobb, via the internet (since she did it first)

Dear Robin,

I like your books. I respect you, and the long road you've travelled, as a writer.

Please stop projecting your issues into my career.

In short, Robin (also known as Megan Lindholm, a very fine writer) is ranting onine about how Livejournal, and blogging in general, kills writing production.

Maybe for her. Maybe for you. Not for me.

(For me, LJ is my coffee break, my social hour, my connection into a community that amuses, entertains, educates and occasionally infuriates me. In other words, it feeds my brain, the very thing I need to write. Reruns of CSI, and the eternal siren call of the nap are far more deadly to my productivity than an LJ-run)

Mileage varies, and assuming Your Experience is the professional boiling point for all writers is pretty egotistical(which is why all the best career advice to writers can pretty much boil down to 'this is what I found, find what works for you.').

You, the Reader, Decides!

I've been given until Friday to write both the bio for "Anna Leonard" and the "Dear Reader" letter that goes in front (I have no choice, they are Required).

Because Madame Editrix, bless her, understands, I have been given permission to do these things either 'straight' or, erm, 'bent.' In the humor, not sexual, use of the terms (and yes, I know humor and sex are often one and the same, but not so much in this genre, so hush and stop dragging me into these parenthetical asides).

So, I'm throwing it open to the unwashed e-masses.

spring has sprung, the grass has riz, I wonder where my royalties iz!*

Somewhere in the vicinity of my open windows, there are lighty scented flowers (I keep thinking hyacinths) blooming.

Outside my office window, on an otherwise bare branch, a very red robin is chirping.

Mmmmm. Spring.


Meanwhile, the copyedit of THE NIGHT SERPENT has arrived, so I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend in-between panels at Lunacon....


(also, dancinghorse? badgermirlacca? I should have photo proof for you next week that yes, I've finally stopped wishing and started doing again.)




*royalty statements don't actually arrive until June. But never let reality stand in the way of a good turn of phrase!
