A whole lotta stupid there, pissing off a writer. Then again, it's entirely possible that the people he's speaking to don't actually read books, you know.
To specifically say that you "hate" someone, and call them a pencil-necked weasel-thief? That's going a bit and beyond caring if your audience knows who you're talking about or not.
My only thought is that he knew Neil's fans and the SF community in general would blog about this, and he figures any free publicity?
I get the feeling he's attempting to paint Neil with the same broad strokes that the social conservatives paint the artists who receive NEA (and other governmental) grants. Demonize the artist because he's not like you and doesn't share your values; after all, those unpatriotic, immoral artists steal the hard working money you give to the government.
It's an anti-intellectual response by someone who doesn't care about discourse, but more about out-screaming someone else.
Jeebus. This country is increasingly governed by a bunch of ill-educated and anti-intelligence brood of gooks who will next think that writing a book makes you somehow anti-American and qualifies you for a mandatory jail (or psychiatric hospital) term until you are cured of such ill-advised activities for good...
