Today, among other things, I exchanged my return TGV ticket for 11 October to Paris/CDG for one on 10 October to Paris Nord. Simple as cookies, once I figured out that I could not actually do the excahnge at the machine; since I was changing the station as well as the date. Huzzah for clerks who speak as much English as I do French, we muddled through. So now I have a place to stay, a friend to meet for lunch, and a chqnce to spend some time at the Musee d'Orsey, which is actually Book Research. Really. I am going to Paris for research. Gods, I LOVE my life.

The rest of the day was spent merely being out and about, walking and listening and interacting with the cityscape. I have now been here a week and a day. My comprehension of French is getting better, although most locals still speak way too fast, naturally. As a fast speaker myslf, I do not begrudge them this. I'll get better at the listening.

The page proofs are almost done; and New Words are simmering gently inside me. I know the feeling; I am anticipating their eventual and inevitable boil. Until then; there is chevre and vin and macarons, and a cat who wants to be scritched. Worse things to face, friday night in Lille.

EtA: favorite wine discovery so far: Chateau Thieuley Bordeaux Blanc; Bought on impulse; savored at leisure. Under 10€.

And how ends YOUR week?

My week ends with gratitude that I'm still alive at its end. It's been a hellish work week. Today the sun is shining. It promises to be a pretty autumn day in the Great Pacific Northwest. I'm hoping the trend continues for the weekend.

Jury duty is over.
It is raining heavily in NYC, and has been for some time. We need the rain, and the weekend should be gorgeous.
DO have lunch at the Musee D'Orsay. Beautiful surroundings and wondrous food.

Excavating what was once T's office above the workplace, before we decided on a shop refit. I am now very grubby.

Week, however, is not over - I'm working through the w/end and my next day off will be on Monday, when I am planning on heading up to London for lunch!

nitpick: mes chers.

My work week ends wet. Flooding has subsided so the commute home shouldn't be bad. I want to make another batch of pesto, but I'll have to see if this morning's deluge has spared the basil. I'm guessing it has, considering the size of those plants. Hm, I need more pecorino, though. There will be cheese shopping.

I will not ask you to bring me an Époisses from Fauchon, no matter how much I want one. Your fellow plane passengers would probably kill you if that happened.

Looky, icon of painting that's in Orsay! Please see if they've repaired it after it was vandalised? Yes, this is THAT painting.

...although most locals still speak way too fast, naturally.

That's Paris. If you were in the south, say Aix en Provence, you would have an easier time, as they tend to speak much more slowly and with more enunciation. Even I with advanced education in French had a hard time understanding the locals in Paris. I had a much easier time in Aix.

So glad you'll be in the Musée d'Orsey! It's beautiful!

Lille, too. The north is much faster-speaking than the south. A little bit like our own country.

In French, numbers above 20 and speaking intelligently on the telephone defeat me.

Wish I were there! i do get to meet a friend at a usedbookstore and trade in massive amounts of fail for me books.

My week? It started off with overwork, muddled through a few days of rest, then on Sunday I hiked on the local mountain meeting girls, bench pressed a personal best, and played ping pong with evenly matched opponents. I blogged in more detail at my LJ site.
