I watch the news and wonder what's actually new...

Apparently the company that owns the mine where there was a fatal explosion in West VA today, and an unknown number are still trapped? Was previously fined to the tune of (reportedly) several million for dangerous conditions, at a different mine they owned.

I really wish I could be even slightly surprised by this. Is there any corporation anywhere that has clean hands? How about only slightly grubby?

Meanwhile, y'all have heard about this?

Constance McMillen's school is not just against gays, but also transgenders, and the learning disabled, to the point where they faked a prom so's not to have to deal with them.

Can we give that entire town a time-out until they are willing to act like rational, or at least compassionate adults instead of shit-flinging cowards? Please?


I suppose the upside is that all this pushed Tiger Woods continuing and quite boring sideshow to 5th or 6th on the rotation....

Note that the mother of the trans girl in question was evicted--by her own mother--after the news came out. They eventually had to leave the state.

Firedoglake blog has comments from a couple kids from the school - or possibly one who belatedly learned to use pseuds once her real name was googled from her screenname and used - discussing the prom. The bigotry and entitlement are mind-numbing, as is the victim-blaming.
