weekend report
May. 31st, 2004 10:11 amHome, and enjoying the relative quiet of a working holiday.
On Friday evening we headed down to Balticon, which is, as a friend said, always a good-but-not-great convention. Sort of like a kid who has more potential than ambition, although we're not sure why.
Anyway, it was a good way to spend forty-eight hours, despite a crappy hotel and some particularly unpleasantly odiferous fans. My panels were interesting and lively, and seemed to satisfy the audience. There were people at my reading I didn't know (hadn't bribed to attend). Got to visit with friends I haven't seen in a while. Ate a large rare steak and drank good single malts in a very civilized bar. Heard nice things said about me (including EE Knight putting me to the blush as he accepted the Compton Crook award -- after a year off, Roc rides again!). Was given a good-luck piece (an Analog Mafia button) by a Mafia member who knew that I am waiting to hear back from Stan on a submission. And after a somewhat unnerving trip home (Nimue's engine kept threatening to overheat), I downloaded my first fan letter from someone who got their hands on an ARC of STAYING DEAD and really really liked it.
Nice. Very nice. :-)
Since then, got my proofs for my Wren & Sergei story in POWERS OF DETECTION, and realized that a) there are things in the story that don't work in the continuity any more, and b) things in the draft of the second book don't flow from the action in the story. Fuck. Fixits are us...
And today, in addition to those fixits, I'm finishing up some promotional materials for Luna, attacking another chunk of dymk-client line edit, and (hopefully) getting some more material ready to send out. Busy is good. Busy keeps me sane. Ish.
Update: This just in: http://www.mcnallyrobinson.com/book_details.php?strISBN=0373802099
I am now waiting for the other shoe to drop. I'm not a pessimist, I do believe that the glass is half-full. I just also believe that it's leaking somewhere all over my dry-clean-onlies.
