Only about 1400 new words on Pack of Lies yesterday, but they're good words I'm quite fond of, and much of the day was swallowed in Things Other (including, yay, an hour at the gym).

Today I did about 900 words in the morning, then went off and had Carlos work his magic.

90 minutes of deep tissue work, literally from toes to scalp, including heated weighted towels I think I like better than the warmed stones experienced elsewhere. They press down against the flesh and encourage you to relax with the combination of heat and pressure. Carlos is wonderful not only because he is a good masseur (although he is), but because he's a good teacher. I think I learned more about my own musculature in these two sessions than I did in an entire semester of bio. The problems of earlier this winter, I am pleased to say, are gone. The scapula area is moving well, the lower back is trouble-free, and while there's some tightness in the adductor brevis muscles and a weakness in my right hamstring, that's just a matter of working them out a little more. Other than that, I am in excellent flexibility and get a gold star for remembering to do my stretches We'll see how well I maintain it come April, when this book is due.... Also, smelling like peppermint FTW!

And then I came home and did the rest of my daily word count. 1500 words a day is a hell of a way to write a book, but it gets it done without the writer getting dead. Hopefully. After a rough start that involved tossing the entire first chapter, I'm liking where this book is going, and how the characters are developing. There's an awful lot front-loaded to set up the caper, but I'm confident that second draft will even things out...

Have been watching the news ticker as it goes by but not flailing myself into the thicket of recriminations re: Obama I've seen elsewhere. I counted on him to be a solemn, pragmatic adult, and so far that's what I'm seeing. Sadly, the people who would be otherwise strong supports seem to have fallen into the "everyone does it, it's okay" pit, and now we're suffering for it (yeah, TD, we're looking at YOU). Dudes, what part of 'accountability" did you think you were going to skate on?

Anyway. Politics, like the economy, is slow and ugly these days. But at least it's being thoughtful and reality-based.

And now I need to gird myself against the gale force winds (not kidding) and head into Little Italy for Jim Blaylock's launch party (and the first official sighting of Ellen Datlow's Leg-wrappings). Play nice while I'm gone, kids!

I may have to come up there just to get a decent massage.... I still have hopes that one day you'll get down here!

That sounds like a lovely massage.

Did I tell you that I've figured out a frugal way to give oneself a paraffin hand treatment? Maybe good for them what types a lot.

Is there anywhere you can find those candles in glass columns, the kind that often have a picture of Mary or Jesus on them? Get a couple (pictures on the glass optional) and light them, letting them melt while you massage your hands with lots of lotion.

When there's about 1/2 inch of melted wax in the column, start pouring it on your hand. Rather than a fast dunk all over this is a splash... wait... splash... but eventually you'll get wax all over your hands. Those candles melt at low temp, so you won't hurt yourself, and the constant splashing helps keep the temperature up.

Keep going until you run out of cool glass to hold the column by or you get bored sitting around with waxy hands. The wax'll peel right off.
