I think that Chief Justice Roberts screwed up the oath because he was nervous -- because the secret service had explained to him that it was his responsibility to throw himself in front of President (!) Obama in case of danger.

(and yes, Fox News is already claiming the oath isn't valid because of the misspeaking. Wankers.)

I wondered how long it would take. (And I'm waiting also for conspiracy theorists to claim that Roberts got it wrong on purpose to invalidate the oath...) *rolls eyes*

I've already seen them. where was it...oh, the comments for the clip linked from wikipedia about the botched oath (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oath_of_office_of_the_President_of_the_United_States). Although, technically, the on-purpose wrong people felt it was as payback for Obama voting against his confirmation.

Incidentally, check out the edit history for that page: over 100 edits today. :)

Obama very carefully didn't say a word out of order. I thought the way he handled it was very slick, since any kind of prompt other than saying the one word that was correct and then waiting would have been picked up by the microphones and quoted forevermore.

It reminded me of my marriage ceremony, where the Priest got lost for a second during our vows and I whispered a prompt to him. Personally, I thought it was good, if unintentional, revenge for the practice session when I asked where I was supposed to be walking at a point when my then-fiance wasn't going to be with me, and the priest nonetheless said, condescendingly, "you let [groom] and me worry about that."

Me prompting him completed the poor priest's befuddlement--he stumbled over his tongue for the rest of the ceremony, and fled immediately afterward, forgetting to stick around for the gratuity. (It was left for him anyway, of course).

(Hey, do you think I could convince the Catholics that because of the minister's mistakes in administering the marriage vows, my marriage was never valid and could be annulled? I could argue, I suppose, that we ended up divorced because the magic was flubbed in the first place...)

CNN pointed out, both in text and spoken, that as of 12 noon Obama had legally become the president even though he hadn't sworn the oath yet. What does Fox say about that?

what do they say? I imagine something along the lines of

*fingers in ears* "la la la la la - I can't hear you! la la la la"

And the vision of them doing so makes me laugh

I was going to wonder how long it'd take for people to start claiming that Roberts fouled up the oath as part of a Hideous Republican Plot, and then I started reading the comments. *facepalm*

For a few glorious hours today, party affiliation didn't matter. Maybe that should be enough. Lincoln vs Douglas, now there was some dirty party infighting.

Roberts messing up is another symptom of his inadequacies and unsuitability for the position he was appointed to--and of the inadequacies and unsuitability of the persons who nominated and confirmed him in that position.

Erm... this is not relevant to my point and I decline to comment on it. Sorry.
