Yay, Mary Russell!

I love those books, as they are a constant reminder that there's no such thing as a bad idea, only a bad execution. Because the Mary Russell books are a terrible terrible idea, and they're bloody brilliant.

Yes - that's an excellent point.

I got to know the series when my mother picked up the first one second-hand and thought I might like it. I was very reluctant to engage with it, because MR is in so many ways such a Mary Sue. But then, so is the original Holmes, and as soon as I'd got to grips with that idea, I loved them. News of a new one has brightened my day no end.

I discovered these books before the first one was even in stores -- we got the hardcover of BEEKEEPER'S APPRENTICE in for reprint consideration when I was at Berkley, and the editor covering SMP asked me to do a first read. I turned cartwheels and sang the book's praises [as did others], but no reprint offer was made. I'm still puzzled by that.

Oddly enough, her contemporary mysteries didn't thrill me, despite wanting to love them.

I was afraid Laurie'd decided she didn't have any more stories to tell in this series, after the last one. Even meh Russell stories are better than none, and good ones are gold.

I loved the ideas of each of her books. I thought her SF books were brilliant and her WWII book was pretty good (with several completely brilliant scenes). I wasn't as fond of her most recent, but it generally held my interest (it was a bit too "Forrest Gumpish" for my taste in spots). I look forward to her next book.

Ooohhh, I'm so excited at the news! Even though the books are a bit uneven, she really manages to pull off the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes relationship, working and romantic, most of the time, which is quite a feat.
