I am sitting at my desk when I see flashing red lights and hear loud voices, not angry or urgent but definitely het-up. I look outside, and there are two NYFD ambulances backed up next to each other, with the crew getting into heavy coveralls, and strapping on gear., But they're doing it in a surprisingly laid back fashion, complete with joking around, so my first thought is they're on a training mission or some routine task. Then I reaize that there's a fire truck parked up the road, just out of line of sight from my apartment. And another one, beyond that.

Actually, there were four trucks and three ambulances, and one SUV, at a quick wheel-count. So all right, I'm a curious meerkat: I shove on my shoes and go take a look.

Apparently, the construction scaffolding on the condo going up next to us fell down (or parts of it, anyway) into the Rather Main Road. The NYFD went up to put things to rights. Nobody hurt, nothing damaged, but I bet there's a construction company that's gonna have a nasty fine waiting for them in the morning....

(the construction company took shit once before, for debris landing on the house next door during the actual building phase, but that was [reportedly] more along the lines of "accidents happen on windy days." This.... not so much.)

And because it's me, of course there's a picture, taken from across the street

Wow

We live around the corner from the Canyon Creek fire station, so I hear it whenever they go out. It can get pretty exciting when they stop nearby (and scary!)

I may have a chance to be in NYC over the weekend of Dec. 4-7 . . . long story, but I'm a finalist in a contest and am supposed to be there to participate in the finals, but family issues may keep me from going. If I do go, what would you say I should not miss seeing--besides Rockefeller Center, Ground Zero, Juilliard (which I didn't get to attend--I have always regretted giving that up, and just want to SEE the building in person), and the Cloisters? (Those are on my list for sure.)

I hope I get to come. Everything's fodder for the writing mill!

We had a fire this morning in an apartment building down the street which got us fire choppers. Very loud and scary. Only one guy, a friend of our assistant manager, was in the building (it's listed for a condo conversion) and scheduled to move out Tuesday... he died. ::moment of silence::

Not horrible, but not good. *grumble* I'm not sure what that means for the company in that realm of insuranceland, but probably not good. Scaffolding is one of those tricky things where it's owned by the construction company and it's part of their "tools" so to speak, however it fell into a street and that's just always bad.

As a construction safety manager I can suggest where to look to see what sort of nasty fine they got. The Building Department gives those out (well, OSHA may also give some out if anyone went to the hospital but from the time of day you posted this probably no one was working.)

Just put the property address into the BIS Web Query form, here...
http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/html/bis/bis.shtml
...and you get the violations and fines. Fun!
