lagilman: coffee or die (bye-bye)

As I head off for a weekend of offline activity, I leave you with this:

You can tell a lot about a person by what they keep on-hand to read when they may be trapped unexpectedly. So come on, fess up: what's on-hand for the browsing in your bathroom?

Me? The most current Wine Spectator and Bon Appetit, and a Lands' End catalog (clearly, this i the only time I get to read magazines. My New York magazines just pile up, unread)

(My parents, I noted recently, have a Health Newsletter, the most recent update from The Asia Society, and real estate pron. Admit it, we all love real estate pron. Especially glossy-finish Manhattan real estate pron).

EtA: and, for those of you who are in more of a LOL mindset --

Ooo, good question. We have the latest issue of Mental Floss, a crossword puzzle book, a Cabella's catalog, and a magazine about training small dogs.

Pyramid Collection catalog. I love their clothes, even if I can rarely wear them well.

I don't have anything to read in the bathroom. There's nowhere to put it that it wouldn't get ruined.

Besides, reading material would just encourage procrastination.

We have a basket next to the loo where all the magazines and catalogs go: Sports Illustrated, Archaeology, LL Bean, Crutchfield, IKEA, Dell...

And if I'm working my way through a book of short stories or essays, that'll end up in the basket too. Currently it's David Sedaris' When You Are Engulfed In Flames.

Tiny bathroom with space issues. But sometimes I bring a catalog in with me.

I used to keep copies of Book Collector magazine when I lived in London and could get them. Now I have: Underground London, A Short History of South East Asia, Lonely Planet Vietnam, and World Famous Battles. Why I have these there I don't honestly know...

Hm... let's see: A copy of "The Word Museum" (a dictionary of forgotten words), several issues of "The Numismatist" and a copy of "Weird Washington," about strange places in Washington state.

We don't have any reading matter in the bathroom, but if we're gonna be there in a while, there's always the laptop (ah, wireless...). Plus, of course, whenever one of us is on the porcelain throne, Aoki always wanders in for a scritch....

Excellent cat picture: "Eh? Speak up there, girly, I can't hear you."

Heh, anytime I sit down in the bathroom, Mayhem (see eye to the left) rushes in with a furry mouse for me to throw so she can fetch it.

I don't keep anything for bathroom browsing, but I'm kind of in unusual circumstances (and always have someone there to talk to). If I did, it would probably be KnitPicks and similar catalogs -- no plot, no brain required, and any "ooh I want that" urges to have died off by the time I got back to my computer. *wry grin*

I do, however, always keep a book of some form by my bed, in case I find myself Awake.

And the picture? I can't tell whether that's an "I MEANT to do that, really" thing or a "why are you not skritching me already, silly hooman" thing.

I currently have three volumes of the comic "Transmetropolitan"", book three of Dark Tower series by Stephen King, and...if this isn't embarrassing enough, my editing binder.

Nothing in the bathroom. Sometimes take a magazine or catalog in with me. In my satchel is "The Universe in a Single Atom" by HH The Dalai Lama, an examination of the intersection of quantum physics with Tibetan Buddhism (and sufficiently dense that I'm only about 30 pages in after over a year of part-time reading. Well worth the multiple passes, however).

As for the picture? "May I be excused to go to the bathroom?"

If one needs to spend that long in the bathroom and one is not in the bath.... I'd suggest medical advice. Although one can buy crossword bogroll, allegedly.

At the moment, it's the latest Yarn Harlot book. On the "reading shelf" is a lot of comic compilations (everything from Lady Tudor Glitz through Calvin & Hobbes) and the two Bridezilla books.

My bathroom is so tiny that I can't keep any reading materials in there. However, when I take bubble baths (almost every night), I bring books and magazines with me (as well as a CD player and my cell phone).

Among the books and magazines I regularly read in the tub:

A novel that I have personally chosen to read for pleasure (as opposed to novels that I review, books that I read for research, etc) - genres range from literary to mystery to thriller to fantasy to science fiction

Current issue of New York magazine

Current issue of The Week magazine

If it's Sunday, the New York Times

I listen to classical music at low volume; and I often call my mother and daughter while I'm in the tub.

Maybe it's an obvious choice, but any of the "Uncle John's Bathroom Reader" books is a terrifically eclectic mix of short and long pieces for, umm, a wide variety of circumstances. Here (http://www.bathroomreader.com/)'s their home page. No connection with them at all other than as a... oh, er... satisfied customer.

My bathroom has a conveniently wide window sill. I usually have a crossword puzzle book of some sort, and books of one comic strip or another, typically Dilbert, Calvin and Hobbes, or Bloom County.

Novels usually leave the bathroom with me, though if I happen to be there when I finish reading one, it sits on the window sill for a while.

Also, that's usually where Locus ends up.

I keep a stack of books, some perennial faves like A Civil Campaign, some current faves, like On Basilisk Station, and a bunch of others. They rotate out every so often when I get tired of them. I don't have any magazine subscriptions.
