more campaign slack-jawed WTFkery
Oct. 6th, 2008 07:33 amWASHINGTON—The Republican National Committee plans to file a fundraising complaint against Democrat Barack Obama's presidential campaign Monday, alleging it has accepted donations that exceed federal limits as well as illegal contributions from foreigners.
RNC officials acknowledged Sunday that they do not have a list of foreign donors to Obama's campaign. Instead, the complaint is based largely on media reports, including one from the conservative Web site Newsmax."...(RNC Chief Council) Cairncross said little is known about many of Obama's donors because the campaign is not required to disclose detailed information about people who give less than $200. (emphasis mine)
So... basically they're saying that if you're not funded by Big Corporate Donors, but rather get donations from, say, Joe Six Pack and Jane Diet Coke [something the Obama campaign has always been very proud and up-front about -- very very grass-roots], you're doing something wrongbadnaughty? And of course, they throw that bit about furriners in there on the basis of Media Reports, not actual, oh, evidence that can be brought forward and shown?
Oh for the good old days, when political parties at least made an effort at their mudslinging. This is just... sad. What's the matter, John? Can't afford to buy yourself a Swift Boat?
Meanwhile, the GOP's bringing up the "same zip code make you a criminal" argument against Obama with regards to Ayer -- and yet claiming that "same yacht during a fiscal scandal" doesn't make McCain a member of the Keating Five. People, people. If proximity is guilt, then proximity is guilt, and McCain is far more recently and directly guilty. if proximity isn't guilt, then why aren't you talking about the economy or the war(s) instead of baseless attacks? Can someone please explain this? (really. not to say "because the GOP is losing," but WHY they think that this sort of 'sauce for you but not for me' is Acceptable [rather than sleazily effective] Behavior). Republicans, here's your chance to defend your party.
How many day until this campaign is over? I'm quite ready for it to be over now.

Date: 2008-10-06 12:13 pm (UTC)Oh and let's see the Republicans in the Alaskan State Congress are still battling in court to have the Troopergate report suppressed until after the election. Voter roll purges are happening across the land -- some of the voter challenges are (the disgusting irony is rich) based on people's having lost their homes in the mortgage crisis and so are no longer at that address. The Brennan Center has a new report out about this little "October Surprise" and CBS, who has focused on the issue previously, has a piece on the release of the report as well

I'm ready for it to be over but then I think things will be worse no matter who is in charge. I think Bush & co. haven't exactly been open and honest about just how badly they've ruined us.

Date: 2008-10-06 06:35 pm (UTC)I'm not a Republican nor a Democrat, but I'll give it a shot.
In a campaign in which neither candidate takes the time to offer substantive "here's a detailed plan for how I'm going to fix what ails us, and here's why I think I'll be able to accomplish it all", instead all we've gotten is "vote for me; I represent change" and "vote for me; I'm a maverick". In a campaign so devoid of actual, reasoned policy and promises, mud will be flung. And there's never been a law requiring flung mud to be either rationally or logically applied. Instead, it's a battle of "how much can we make the other guy stop what he's doing to defend against what we do," because, right or wrong, every time one of the candidates has to say "No, I didn't say that" or "That's not what I meant", that's a little nudge in favor of the guy who made him say that, because he's now off his planned message, and defending against a lame attack. The truly rational campaign would ignore all such attacks and continue to present a reasoned, intelligent, compelling reason to vote for its candidate, rather than against the other guy, but they're also too beholden to the media, which demand responses to the attacks.
And why isn't Obama's campaign saying "Neener neener, you did too"? Because they don't want to sound like they're saying "Yeah, so's your old man" (so to speak).
This isn't a high-minded "How best can we all serve the country" election campaign; it's a down and dirty "what do we have to do to get more votes than the other team" campaign. We might want the former, but the last several decades have shown us that the latter is easier to run and easier to win.
