You know you're in the writing groove when you get up and head for the computer and don't even think "I should clean the kitchen first" (dinner last night was a multiple-mess thing and thank god for a dishwasher). Also? I didn't take time to make coffee, just took slugs off the diet coke bottle.

You know you have a Mellow Cat when you pick him up off the desk ('don't bother mommy now, sweetie') and hold him upside down over your head (arm strain!) and he lets you do it without struggling or complaining.

You know you're a fantasy writer in a technological world when you IM someone to ask a detail about wet cooperage, and they give you the URL of a site that gives you the entire history of wood for that purpose. Yay!

You know I'm on my coffee break because I'm posting instead of writing...

American red oak is porous, allowing excessive evaporation. Source is ancient history, I believe Eric Sloane.

That would explain why it's used for wines that require a bit more oxidation then (Marsala, etc and the infamous "angel's share" of whisky). But yeah, white oak is the preferred option for most wine casks.
