The City of New Haven strikes again.

*headdesk*

I've never before and hopefully never will again encounter a government entity so damn proud of the fact that they're not in sync with State or Federal databases...

Seriously. New Haven? You're making Trenton look competent. That's just...sad.

(I was spoiled, in retrospect. Newark might be corrupt like whoa, but they were up-to-date with it.)

There will be writing-hay made of this, oh yes. Both fiction and non..

I'm going to have to call up my friend Vicki. She lives up in your area and has had some, ah, interesting things to say about New Haven. (She's English, but her family goes to local county board meetings because, hi, they pay local taxes. Being told to "sit down and shut up" because they're not registered voters didn't go over well with them. Because, hi, local taxpayers.)

My family has owned property around this lake in Maine for over 100 years now. They get told to shut up, because they are just still summer people. So they have no say about what use their taxes get put to (and occasionally they get charged with a locals taxes, because his property abuts' theirs)

Which lake? (Grew up on Auburn, family had camp on Maranacook)

"Summer Complaints" don't have any rights up there, of course not!! ;> Why should the natives have more of a say than those weevils From Away?

Oh noes, what did they do now. I'm afraid to ask.

Um, if you need like help with probate (Name change?) in New Haven then I might have a hookup for you.

Aaaah. DMV troubles. I know them well. I live in NYC now, but used to live in New Haven too.

As someone who has had to deal with this many, many times ...

First of all, it's not just New Haven. It's the entire freaking state. My favorite was the time I had the city of West Haven trying to get taxes out of me for a car I bought six months *after* I moved out of Waste Haven. :P Fortunately, I was able to convince them they were insane and get out of that one, but it took several visits to City Hall (in both West and New) and a hell of a lot of aggravation.

But in most cases, where they get you is in the details. They don't tell you this, but the taxes are charged based on the DMV Grand List from the previous October. Which means that if you owned the car and garaged it in New Haven at any time during the month of October, 2007, you owe the taxes on it now. If you didn't own the car last October, but just hadn't gotten around to returning the plates to the DMV so they would know that, you're still on the hook b/c you were still on their list at that time.

Which is why I *really* need to get my ass down to DMV and drop off the plates from my Bug, b/c while I will resign myself to paying taxes one last time on the car since I junked it just this past February, I gotta make damn sure they can't tag me again!!

(If they're trying to get taxes out of both you and C. for the current cycle, *that*'s a problem. Technically only you owe this time around. She'll be on the hook starting with next year.)
