a well-made meal should have four elements:

taste, of course.
aroma, because the smell of something is a major component of taste
texture, because your mouth gets bored, otherwise.
color, because you really do eat with your eyes.

The advantage of texture and color is that it also reminds you to bring in elements you might not remember, otherwise -- elements that are essential to a well-balanced diet.

Tonight's dinner is a prime example. I had some leftover spicy beef from last night -- not enough for a full meal, but a decent handful. I got out the wok (all hail the wok!) and sliced up some garlic and set it to brown. Then I added two ribs of celery, and a quarter-head of shredded red cabbage. White, green, and red (okay, purple). I added in the beef (brown), and sprinkled it with some sesame oil and soy sauce. Then I threw in some leftover pasta (white) from the fridge, stirred until everything was mixed, and had a fabulous, spicy, crunchy, healthy, filling meal entirely made out of leftovers.

Yum. And it's pretty, too!

How many colors were in your meal?

Once I get around to making it, mine will be mainly yellow and white. Not up to doing anything fancier than chicken and yellow rice. It may look plain, but lord, is it tasty!

White, brown, green: chicken breast baked in salsa verde. Green, orange, purple: romaine with carrots and red cabbage, and mandarin oranges, and (red-brown) balsamic vinaigrette.

We are all about the color and the crunch and the yummy. :)

Yellow, reddish-brown, and green. And white.

Tamale casserole (browned ground beef with onions, celery, and chili powder baked under a coating of corn bread) and sauteed zucchini slices with garlic and olive oil.

And a toffee chip cookie or two for dessert [g].

And milk, of course.

My dinner was chicken marsala with pasta and veggies plus wine and water, so the colors were yellow, white, green, red and brown. Yummy.

I won't tell you what color dessert was. I'm keeping him for myself. ;-)

I added things to the previous night's low carb beef stew (which was brown from the beef and green beans with white onions and orange carrots). I diced the remaining beef cubes and added a hand full of instant brown rice and a diced red bell pepper: soup! This was consumed with a Rye Krisp with Promise margarine, brown and yellow.

You left out the colors of the presentation. Even though I live alone I used my good dishes. These are teal, hand-painted Japanese sushi plates with matching bowls and a perfectly matched set of teal dinner and dessert plates, all with terra cotta rims.

I washed it all down with a pink, clear glass of white Zinfandel. Yes, you may come out to Long Island and watch the sun go down over the LI Sound as we consume a similar repast.

red, yellow, green, burgundy, beige with pale yellow on top. Veggie chili (tomatoes, corn, green peppers and zuchini, kidney beans, chick peas) with grated emmental. Washed down with sparkling water.
