Normally I hear a constant stream of sirens rising and falling in the distance -- the music of the city. I rarely take conscious notice of it. But there was a lull a few hours ago, when all I heard were the evening birds and some crickets, and the sounds of kids playing...and then the sirens came back, distant but growing, from Manhattan all the way up through Westchester.

And with the sirens, a sound came from up the block, near the college, that I've heard only once before. A deep, echoing sound. An angry sound.

A hungry sound.

I know that sound, although I'd prayed never to hear it again. Not here.

I've sent e-mails warning people, anyone who will believe me and even people who may not. I hope [livejournal.com profile] kradical and [livejournal.com profile] terri_osborne can get the cats into their carriers and get over here in time. This building will be easier to defend than their place...

Thank gods I stocked the pantry this week. Need to make sure we have enough fresh water. And ammo.

Gonna be a long night.

You know, you had me all alarmed until I saw the tag. I was all set to say "maybe it's an acoustic trick, once I mistook a stump grinder for a tornado."

I think I'm going to grab the cats and try to get someplace with people in it that's safe. Last year they kinda just passed me by but being by myself...with the noises outside...is too freaky.

Hasn't made it here yet. I think even zombies are having trouble moving in this heat. :P

On the up side, I am well provisioned, seeing how I recently laid in supplies for hurricane season. Not much else to do but bunker down and wait it out....

Sunovab*tch. Dammit, this year's crop in SE Michigan are wearing *Lions* jerseys. Guess they just got tired of waiting for a winning season and went all zombified. News shows 'em shambling out of Ford Field. Which is several hours away at zombie-shamble speed, unlike the Pontiac Silverdome, only an hour-and-a-half shamble away.

At least Honululu Blue and Silver is easy to aim at, and nobody'll miss 'em.

House is secure. Point defenses are active. Field-of-fire is clear. Provisions replenished from this week's 49 hour power outage, including fuel for gen set and chainsaw. Operation of both confirmed.

Lock and load.

We used books to chase them off. Zombies aren't much for reading.

We've holed up in the castle. Rod has had all the gates finished, so we've barricaded them, but one wall is still only 10 feet high; the rest are 14", and we can shoot from the tower. Paul made sure to grab our neighbor Lois and get her in there and then ran back for the rest of the assault rifles. We can equip a good squad, should anyone else pass by needing refuge. Paul and I are mixing a few common household chemicals together in the proper proportions and we'll have lovely pipe bombs. Food, however, may be problematical. We only have enough for a few days. I'm thinking Paul and I might make a break for it in the truck and go across the street to the grocery store and check out the situtation. We're hoping the 102 degree heat will slow 'em down...

Haven't heard from anyone else in the rest of the city. I hope my sister-in-law has enough sense to get herself and the kids our way. Besides, we could use her weapons and booze.
