Meanwhile, it's 92 degrees outside at 9:30. My super has come by to make sure that my a/c is running properly (we have a number of elderly residents, who have lived here for 20+ years. O. takes his job quite seriously).

Yes. Good building. *pets building* I'm sure someday I'll be cranky with it, but it is a good building.

Sadly, O. has informed me I'm going to need a new sleeve, as he "doesn't like, no" the looks of the existing one. Thankfully, it can wait until the heat wave has ebbed a bit.
(although he is doing some of the work now, making the cats retreat into the bedroom because eeeeK! drills!)

ah, non. A/c is my headache but sleeve is building resposibility. They install and maintain. All I have to do is be here when the work is done.

What is a sleeve? (I live in SF, no one has artificial airconditioning here. (hate to mention this, but I have the heat on)

There are three basic kinds of a/c -- window units (self-explanatory), central air (one uit that is piped throughout the entire house) and through-the-wall, which is what I have. This means that, instead of taking up a window (and blocking a view) a chunk of wall is cut out and the unit installed there (typically in the space below a traditional window). But in order to support the weight of that unit, and keep corrosion and the elements from creeping in, a metal "sleeve" is inserted into the cut-out, first.

The sleeve in my living room is an original (ca. 1980) and so, in O's opinion, needed replacing (after taking a look, he was right!)
