Take the book seriously. Not yourself.

(no real anecedote behind this, just a reminder my brain gave me this morning I figured I'd pass along to anyone who hadn't gotten there yet, or might have forgotten)

EtA: also, I hear rumors that FREE FALL got not-unkind things said about it in this month's Locus. Anyone got a copy?

Excellent advice. I think we need a T-shirt.

A vital corollary, at least in software engineering, is:
"The book is not yourself. When you get criticism, stomp down the ego."

Wise words. So much of life's troubles come down to grappling with the problems we create for ourselves from our own ego.

For me, I've also found it helps to actively be less judgmental as well. And, as I'm known for teaching Klingon, it's hard to throw stones. :)

Are you known for teaching Klingon or do you actually teach it? For credit? At a California university? (Sorry. I couldn't resist.)

I am known for it, and actually teach it.

(and these I do not sell for gold or coin of silvery shine...)

Credit? Well, yes an no, but not the kind you can probably cash in at a UC or CSU.

It was in May. Got my copy in the mail this weekend! :-) Free Fall's in the Short Reviews section. After a short plot rundown, Carolyn Cushman says, "Things build to a thrilling, if somewhat chaotic peak, finally resolving the problem of the Silence in a powerful conclusion, while leaving some interesting new questions about Wren's abilities - and her relationship with Sergei."
