Man, you guys made it tough -- twenty-four entries, and a lot of disagreement among the judges. In fact, one entry got an equal number of 'best' and 'worst' votes!

The celebrity judges were merely asked to choose based on an instant gut reaction, . From their choices, I applied somewhat more stringent guidelines: was it 5-7-5? Did it try to match the "moment in time" of a true haiku? Did it have a transitive moment in the second line? For the bad ones: was it really bad? I mean, really? Did it make me snarf? Each entry got points, and then I let Pandora paw-pick the winner. (kidding!)

But, in the end, there can be only one... in each category, anyway.

Best:

The leaves of the book
fall open into my hand
but it is not there.

Worst:

can has book to eat?
Retrievers are so tasty
want to nomnom Wren

Special split-vote snarf award:

cheap, tawdry begging
seem the order of the day
please give me your book

Winners, step forward and claim your copy of STAYING DEAD! [mailing addresses should be sent to wrensergei(at)lycos(dot)com.]

And everyone who entered gets a signed bookplate, if they so desire...

Life's a little crazy today, so the new contest will be posted instead on Friday, giving everyone the weekend to work on it...

Congrats to the winners!

I totally agree with the snarf-factor of the last one.
