Many years ago, I caved and bought my first Palm, a Vx. I named him Bunter, because what else would you call something that was going to gently take over and organize your life?

Bunter 1.2 came about when Bunter had to be replaced -- same model, same software, same everything. And he performed beautifully for many years of meetings, commuting, plane-reading, and generally acting as my brain (and far more dependable than the meat one, sadly).

But thing started to slow down, and the screen was getting scratched, and it became time to retire him to easier pastures (i.e. my mom, who will use him as an address and date book only).

And so, today, I put hands on Bunter 2.0. A Tungsten E, silvery and shiny and while I'll miss my faithful Vx, I can't wait to start putting him through his paces...

Now to see if my old software will translate without making me froth and stress. Wheeee!

Oh, my boss has an E and I absolutely drool over it every time I have to update it for him.

Please, let me know how the transfer goes, okay? (Although I probably don't want to know. I keep telling myself I don't want a new one because I don't want the hassle of moving the copious stuff I have on the current one to the new one.) But tell me anyway, okay? :-)

ooooh!

New toys!

Next time we're at a con together I'll beam you over a picture of a certain meerkat with a moose that I took at Philcon in 1999 that you might get a kick out of :)

Heh. I got a fairly snazzy HP iPaq for Christmas (64MB, Bluetooth, voice-recording ability, etc.), and am still trying to train it to do the handwriting-recognition thing. OTOH, it *is* wonderfully convenient even if I have to tap the teeny Qwerty-layout with the stylus to type (Pocket Word's autocomplete is astonishingly quick on the uptake), has some amusing games on it, and also holds the entire schedule database for my local transit system.

Is fun.

Tell me how the translation goes? I'm waffling about updating Giles.

Ah see, but you missed an opportunity for uber-geekdom and convenience. I remember you just got a new cellphone recently, and you could have got the whole shebang in one package...like I did with my shiny new Treo 600. Ooh...aahh!

Libba just doesn't understand...but you should see her with her cute new iPod mini. I will convert her!

OK, I get that concern and I considered it. But I decided the convenience of the all-in-one device was worth it. And for me, the connectivity is key. I don't play games or stuff on it (though I might avail myself of that option on the long flight to Italy this weekend), but being able to check email wherever I am, without lugging a laptop around, is amazing.

My quirk is that I didn't enable text messaging or IM...I don't need that kind of distraction, that's for sure. Besides, maybe it's the one area I'm a caveman about, but I just don't see how texting is easier than just calling and talking to someone.

I also went from a Vx to an E and it was a breeze. I just synced the Vx one last time, then installed the new software from the E and synced that. No hassle at all.

Finally, enough memory to carry around my Readerware databases.
