Barry Hughart's The Chronicles of Master Li and Number Ten Ox.

Some of you are nodding wisely. You, I'm not talking to. You already know.

The rest of you. Pay attention.

If you don't already own this book *suri hugs her own now-OP omnibus copy* you really really should. And you should read it once a year, religiously, over a long weekend with the phone turned off and a glass of sake (or tea) at your elbow, and, and...

Okay. You should own it. And now you can!

Where and When to Buy

Seriously. When was the last time you heard me squee over a book? (I was right then, too.)

Bridge of Birds is one of my favorite books, ever. The phrase "with a small flaw in his character" is a family byword, except somehow I think we never gave it to [profile] kradical to read. Listen to your sister, and go forth and read. This is a wondrous fine book.

This is fabulous! My copies of One and Two are falling apart, and I never found three. Never understood why BH seemed to vanish in thin air either. I wish he'd written more about anything.
Thanks so much for the heads-up!

$38! It had better be worth gold. That said, the description sounds wonderful. I don't suppose it will come out in MMPB? *wry grin*

*rubbing my shoulder from the "bah" punch*

I thought it was 2 not 3 books in the omni-bus.

Bridge of Birds (the first book) is worth far more than a mere $38, by itself. So, not only a bargain, but the other two books are free. What's not to like?

*eek! Rushes off to meeting across campus!*

Thanks for help spreading the word. Little did you or John O'Neill know that, when we were all sitting at the dinner table at World Fantasy Con last year that you were both huge fans of this book. John's gone on about it for so long last year I finally broke down and bought the omnibus to read for myself -- though with a new job and other time challenges I haven't managed to read much of anything but short story collections, so it sits (mostly) unread on my shelf.

I'll pass on the news to John, and read the thing myself to see if need to put a leather bound copy on my wish list.

Bridge of Birds is one of my all-time favorites (I bounced when I saw the name Hughart in your journal-- I was just talking about him yesterday). I didn't care much for the two sequels though. I always thought that they lacked the same enthusiasm and freshness of his first.

Heard they were good, but never came across a copy. I did pick up a paperback of Jerusalem Poker though the other day!

I loved the Story of the Stone! I bought all three as they came out new, and gave them around to friends and left for bookcrossings, and bought the 3 volume omnibus. One Eyed Wong's is classic!

I was so happy to find that omnibus. The second volume was impossible to find.
