Cops Capture Getaway Goat in the Bronx

In a desperate bid for freedom and to avoid a date with a butcher's knife, a goat made a break for it in the Bronx. The 25 pound pygmy goat was spotted yesterday afternoon on 141st St. near St. Ann Ave. in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx and police quickly captured it. A worker with Animal Care & Control believes that the animal probably escaped from a neighborhood slaughterhouse.

Police have named the estimated 18-month-old goat Denny, who was described as being a little shy and cold, but otherwise healthy. Denny will be headed to Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY today, where he will join a number of other famous four-legged escapees from the City. Last June, cops picked up Lucky Lady, a young lamb who also was believed to have fled a Bronx slaughterhouse. There's also Joey, a goat found wandering around Brooklyn. And perhaps most famous is Queenie, the cow who escaped from a Queens slaughterhouse in 2000 and evaded capture for 20 blocks before being cornered in a playground and shot with a tranquilizer gun.

I really like that the animals that have the balls/wits/luck to escape get to go to Farm Sanctury.

That's an animated film waiting to happen, right there.

A former coworker of mine (a militant vegan :) now works for Farm Sanctuary. I'm sure she'll be forwarding this story around to all her MySpace friends by morning. :)

Now I have a vision of the animals as medieval criminals, trying to make it to the nearest church so they can claim sanctuary and get a reprieve. ;)

Let's see: $480.00 in paint damages from goat standing on hood of Liz's car. Knee injury from male goat displaying dominance... daily cleaning of carport from goats not being put in by ranch mangler.

I'll take my goat with curry tyvm.

I'm so torn--- on the one hand "Run Denny Run!" on the other...roast goat. T'is truly a moral dilemma. Since I don't like lamb or mutton, it's "Run Lucky Run!" Dang, I'm a hypocrite- I love meat, but I also love little baby animals. I may have to go to just fish and birds since they don't cause me as much moral trauma. sigh

LOL, Bev. I feel your pain. I'm a vegetarian, so it's not exactly the same, but… anyway, I fix meat when we have company, on the principal that everyone has the right to make their own choices. But if I really feel that killing animals is a bad thing to do, why do I let dead animals be served in my house? I haven't found the answer to that one yet, but I do feel hypocritical.

I am so torn. I think a person has to realize that meat comes from living creatures and decide if they can live with that. I like vegetables, but I still want the meat. I wish I could find a way to not eat the beasties. I just try to keep in mind what I am eating. I think maybe thanking the beast for giving up their lives for me would help.

Someone once said to me, "I cherish my position at the top of the food chain." I pretty much agree with that, though maybe not so crassly stated. :)

I wish I lived in England (not really, but for vegetarians, it's paradise). They have lovely veggie protein made to taste sort of like meat, at least for those of us that don't indulge anymore. That way I could have the taste and have my principles too. LOL But unfortunately in France, you mostly get incomprehension when you say you are a vegetarian, unless of course you hang out with the anti-specistes.

I have a vegan friend who still wears leather. Her justification is "just because I choose not to eat animals doesn't mean I deny that other people do, and in that case might as well use as much of the animal as possible". That *almost* works for me.

In principle I could be vegetarian, but in practice if I were I'd starve to death, since I really don't like most vegetables. :} So I try to buy free-range meat and eggs wherever I can, and do my best to support local farms rather than factory farming. (I still can't bring myself to eat veal, though, and I always cringe a little when I'm served a lamb dish.)

I keep meaning to pick up The Omnivore's Dilemma. I have a feeling that book will really speak to me.

Now if they can only catch the whippet!

BTW, saw Amsterdam tonight--I'm glad I saw your comments on it, otherwise I'd have forgotten. This definitely has potential.
