Reading Is Fundamental. Basic premise: get kids reading, show them the fun in reading, and they will be able to advance in life. Government funding, and the support of, among many other people, First Lady Laura Bush.

George Bush just yanked the funding.

Paying for a war is more important than educating our kids.

Fuck that shite.

from the RiF site:

"Since we first shared the disappointing news of President Bush’s proposed elimination of funding for RIF in his fiscal year 2009 budget less than two weeks ago, more than 30,000 messages have been sent to Congress urging legislators to reinstate RIF’s funding.

This initial outpouring of support has prompted RIF’s congressional champions to capitalize on the momentum by circulating in Congress a Dear Colleague letter on behalf of RIF. The Dear Colleague letter asks members of Congress to sign-on in support of RIF’s funding. This is an important next step in the campaign to protect RIF’s FY09 funding.

We are asking Congress to appropriate $26 million to fund RIF’s book distribution program for some 4.6 million underserved children and families in fiscal year 2009. The funding is critical to support our reading motivational programs at nearly 20,000 locations nationwide.

We hope you will share this message with six or more friends who will also contact their members of Congress. Thank you in advance for your support!"

Act Now!

I said it on [livejournal.com profile] neadod's LJ entry on RiF and I'll repeat it: since the No Child Left Behind Act, RiF stands for Reduction in Force.

I couldn't say it while I was on active duty, but I can say it now... I hate that man and what he's done to our country.

We are not in the least surprised. He claims to be the education president, then slashes funding that helps education.

Yep. Have been yelling about it for days, and already have a fierce call in to my rep (who is Madame Speaker).

This is a no-brainer. Of course, so is George W. Bush.

$26 million. What's that, two hours of Iraq?

I hope there is a hell, so that man and his cronies can burn in it.

Well, heck. Dubya can't read, so why should anybody else learn how?!

Plus, an uneducated electorate is a Republican electorate.

*hiss*

Not to mention that an uneducated and broke electorate is a good source for cheap labor in the factories so rich fat cats can become richer fat cats. It never ceases to amaze me that "patriots" will sell their country's future down the toilet for their own personal interest, compassion means cutting funding for child welfare and "family values" means ensuring that same sex couples and their children can't be considered a family. Don't even mention the Blue Skies Initiative or a host of other GOP plans that were nothing like their name suggested.

Factories?

What are these "Factories" you speak of?

I remember such a thing from the very early days of my youth, but they've all gone to China now...

Yes, but they would come back if workers agreed to work for peanuts. Oh? They wouldn't be able to afford to live? So? What's the problem with that?

Grrrrr.
