Dude. Have you seen the Wicked Witch of the West? Lime green and black horizontal striped stockings? Ewww.

Norman Bates...another style icon? Cruella's hair? (Although no, not dowdy.)

Seriously, have you taken a good look at the Bates' mom-dress? Frumpy *and* dowdy.

And while Ed Gein (the real Texas chainsaw massacre-er) may have been dressed in leather, it wasn't what I would consider the height of fashion, even for South Texas.

I think the stylistic problem with evil is not so much "dowdy" as "tacky." For example, female villains tend to waaaaay overdo it on jewelry and garish make-up. And male villains really need to figure out that leather pants just aren't a good look on most men over 30.

What about JKR's Umbrige? She wasn't the villan, but she was evil. She wore black velvet bows in her hair.... yeah.

Ah, true. I personally think she's both, LOL

Umbridge was the one I was thinking of. Psycho AND evil.

You KNOW this is an anthology waiting to happen, right?

I may have to change my vote.

Second the anthology idea--can I play?

There's Evil, and then there's the Evil Wannabes. The Grand Secret Council of Evil Masters has very low standards for Real Evil.

Thinking about the (contemporary) people I believe to be truly evil, and ranking them in descending order -

D. Cheney
D. Rumsfeld
Janet _____ (editrix)
Randy ____ (news editor)
Diane ______ ("talent")

Only one has any sense of style and fashion, and she's at the bottom of the list. Evil is a style unto itself, I think. Fashion sense just makes for better video.

Are we defining dowdy as in lacking stylishness or as in antiquated?

Evil can be lacking in style... however evil is much more interesting when done with flair.

Evil plus the antiquated or with old fashioned mannerisms would be interesting I think... I mean, nothing says that just 'cause you're evil doesn't mean you lack in manners or "rules."

...I was going somewhere with that... I think.
