I'm very glad they did. But there's an odd little knee-jerk in the middle:
"Contrary to prevailing wisdom, the future is not here yet. As science fiction writers, we're perhaps in a better position to see that than others. Society is in a transitional phase, as physical entertainment media slowly give way to their digital equivalents."
I feel as if SFWA is solemnly assuring me that the Web is the future. Ya think? The future *is* here. Apple is now the third largest music retailer in the U.S; in Q1 2007 14% of music sales were in digital form. The transition from physical entertainment media to digital is going blindingly quickly, much quicker than, for instance, the transition from vinyl and tape to CD. And the idea that SFWA is better in touch with the future is, sadly, laughable given this summer's foofaraw.
This summer's "foofaraw" didn't speak for all of SFWA, as the fact that there WAS a foofaraw attests. But I'm not at leisure to get into that argument again right now.
And I have to disagree somewhat -- the transition of reading media to digital isn't going quite as fast as the aural changeover, as evinced by recent discussions here, among many other places. At least another generation for digital to take over entirely, and in the meanwhile means of paying for the effort of all content providers in the future needs to be determined. That's what we're all in agreement on.
As to reading, I wholeheartedly agree. I *hate* reading on screens -- present company notwithstanding -- and shall be a very, very late adopter of digital books. But movies and music? Blink and the physical media will be gone. It astonishes me. Look at the porn industry, always on the techno frontiers. Just as video killed film and DVD killed video, the Internet is killing DVD.
