From 5000+ words to barely 1000 today. Bah. There was cause, however -- in addition to it being an Office Day, I had Great Trauma -- having to finally bow to publisher pressure and get an offical Author Photo for PR purposes. Bleah. I have been recovering ever since.

To counteract all the soot and evil in the news, some inspirational stuff:

A 4-foot-nutin, 90 pound woman working in a convenience store in Long Island was the victim of a gun-wielding would-be robber. Or rather, the attempted victim -- she pulled a small hand ax from below the counter and chased the guy off. The video is both disturbing (she could have been shot so easily) and hysterical. You go, sister! I have to admit that I wish she'd landed a blow -- hooded and/or masked assailants of any stripe pretty much deserve to be hacked a few times.

Also, they're showing film of the supertanker dropping clouds of flame retardant on some of the fires in California -- fire retardant that is also a powerful fertilizer, to encourage the area to start growing again once the fires are done. May it be soon.

And the rest of the news was spent discussing Rudy's turncoat support of the Sox in the World Series (his excuse: he's loyal to the league, which in football at least is a totally valid reason, but doesnt seem to work so well in baseball). This amuses me, mainly because it proves once again that Rudy is a whore, even among politicians. Why does the rest of the country not see how much of a whore he is?

The fire retardant is a fertilizer? OK, did someone come up with that on purpose? That's brilliant.

I don't know -- it may have been an intentional creation or a happy accident of evolving firefighting techniques -- first I'd heard of it was last night. I agree, it is brilliant. I wonder if it requires the heat to burn off and activate the fertilizer from the retardant?

It also had the side effect of being beautiful to see, a curtain of heavy red raining down out of the silver plane, red to fight the red burning on the ground.

From the video footage from the security camera, the axe looked like a small hand ax. However, when they interviewed the woman, the one she showed looked like it came off a fire truck. It was a serious piece of hardware for such a tiny person to wield.

As for Rudy, it's not like hypocracy hasn't always been his watchword. I'm a Mets fan, and think the National League is superior to the American because of the lack of the odious designated hitter rule, but I wouldn't root for the Braves in a Series for all the money in Steinbrenner's bank.

Perhaps it was the motion that led to my thinking the ax was shorter in the vid, or the late hour, or maybe I need to convince the missus that it's time for HD!

Only if "idealism" means "why can't they just stay bought, like proper politicians?"

More seriously, I don't see anything wrong with a politician being an animal of opportunity -- if you can't bend, you break, and once you're broken you're useless in negotiations, of which politics (and most of life_ is. I just object to them treating us like we're ALL too stupid to see them when they're being gormless in public, or selling themselves for a short-term and almost immediately useless goal.
