All of the above and more.

I voted none of the above, b/c my real answer is "some of the above." Blogging is a journal for me, some of which I share with my friends. But it's also a philosophical/political ranting ground, a place for mindless entertainment, and, of course, a huge procrastination station.

Needs a "some of the above" category...

But mostly nattering.

Probably more fannish squeeing than anything else, but really a little bit of everything else, too.

Actually need some kind way to indicate more than one of the options apply but not all of them apply...

Since my motivations for blogging change on a daily basis, from "I have fifteen minutes to kill" to "something funny happened last night" to "I've been meaning to talk about this," it's definitely all of the above.

You missed Tom Tessier and F. Paul Wilson reading at the KGB Bar last night! The readings themselves were off - Tom was very sick, possibly delirious with fever, and Paul's story wasn't the best choice - but the rest of the evening was a blast.

I got this LJ originally just so I could comment non-anonymously. I don't really know why I post, especially since I do it so rarely. How lame is that?

Most of the above, although 'shameless self promotion' hits a lot of personal options. I doubt anyone's that interested in my personal evolution.

Also, you omit 'cute cat stuff', which I suspect is the mighty, relentless engine that drives LJ. Certainly in Desperance's and my own case.

I started mine so my far-flung relatives would have a place to read about the latest exploits of my kid. I do make other sorts of posts, but that's reason number one.

Worse yet, for the first two years or so, they weren't even reading it. I'd email links to them, read the URL to them over the phone, write it in letters but they were never able to find it.

I'm the only one who picked "because all the cool kids were doing it?"

Huh.

My plunge into LJ came from the eHarl/Luna boards --- I clicked on CE Murphy's link to here (or maybe it was here webpage with a link to LJ), and then discovered you owned a live journal ... and that's how the friends list was born.

So if you've been wondering who to blame, blame suri. :D

When I first delved into LJ I was active duty and didn't really have a voice for my own opinions (which were and still are very different from the Macho Right Wing Republic that is most of the active duty crowd), reading your LJ and being connected to users like ginmar, kefira, neadods ---and later discovering Making Light showed me that there were very intelligent people out there who could say what I felt; but do it with better grammar and punctuation. ;)

Thanks suri.
