Rather than a moment of silence, I will observe his passing by putting my copy of Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto on the cd player. Conducted by Riccardo Chailly, and featuring Luciano Pavarotti, Leo Nucci, and June Anderson.
For Pavarotti, a moment (or several) of sound seems more appropriate than one of silence.
I was fortunate enough to meet him about eight years ago, when I was working for San Francisco Opera. He was, as you'd imagine, larger than life. I remember this mammoth hand shaking mine, and hearing his booming voice saying "I'm Lucky!" A play on his name, apparently, which he enjoyed. More than just an extraordinary voice, he was an extraordinary presence, and his absence will be deeply felt.

I've got the Mozart and Verdi requiems going off in my head.
I got to hear him at least twice. My goodness, what a presence, and what sweetness of voice. The Italian tenor par excellence.
Addio!
