Four Warning Signs This May Not Be a Good Signing:

1. You arrive to see a poster of your book in the entryway, but no text to indicate that you will be in residence/signing that afternoon.

2. Your contact person mis-states your name and bio during the PA announcement.

3. They only have books 1, 2 and 4 of the series available.

4. They have tucked you into the far corner of the cafe with piles of books, but without any signage to indicate who you are or what you're doing.

How the store-folk didn't understand that the ideal place for a signing is in the flow of traffic, near the cash register, so you can get people who are already inclined to buy books, not just people who are passing through on their way to the movie theater.... *shakes head*

Fortunately, I am a signing-experienced meerkat, and I had support troops (aka arcaedia and her faithful sidekick mcurry) along with me. We soon had things sorted, had created signage, and taken over a better spot more in the traffic flow. Thus situated, I managed to charm (with the help of lively sales patter and free chocolate chip cookies) a respectable number of people over to my table. And we sold a good number of books, too, considering it was a lovely summer Saturday afternoon and most people of sense were enjoying the great outdoors.

Last night we finally got around to watching 'Music & Lyrics' of which I had heard good things. Good things were true: Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, each playing to their strengths (charm, humor, and the ability to not take themselves too seriously) in a light and endearing romantic comedy. This worked not only because of the stars, but due to an amazingly clever script that managed to take an unexpected turn without being forced [and the one thing I called it on was explained and redeemed soon after, plot-wise. Kudos to the writer[s]). Well worth renting.

Glad you rescued the signing. I adored Music and Lyrics, found it witty and funny and charming, and the 80s stuff was hilarious. Glad you enjoyed it.

Ahh, so Borders treats its signings like its in-store musical performances, I see. :/ Glad to hear you were able to salvage it though!!

Heh. They even had a mike and an amp set up for my reading. I declined -- I can't imagine anything more annoying to people, even people there to see me, than to have my voice booming out into the store....

(although trying to read over the sound of the ice machine at the cafe made me almost reconsider)

Good on you for making it successful after all! Yeah, cookies probably helped, but hey...maybe there are now some more readers about to be addicted to Wren and Sergei. :-)

As for the great outdoors, hooboy. I was in it all day and am WIPED. I may post about it tomorrow. There are pictures, but right now there's no energy. ::thud::
