And now, of course, having dozed through much of the day in a painkiller-induced haze, I'm awake despite taking another dose of said painkillers, and trying not to let myself watch any more footage of or coverage from Madrid. I can read the print coverage, but the visuals...

no.

The universe spins itself insane.

I told a friend, quite seriously and with honest belief, that I don't think there can be peace in the (extended) middle east. It's not the people; it's the very sand and soil. It's too old, too blooded. The only thing we can do is let it sit barren for a few hundred years, until the sun has parched the need for vengeance from its cells.

Let's go to the moon. Let's go to Mars. But not to terraform it -- let's instead Mars-form ourselves. The soil there must be free from hatred by now.

The worse the evening news gets, the more often I decide to go with simply listening to 'The World at Six' on CBC radio. The news is still horrific, but at least there's no images to go with it.

I agree with you, but of course, it's never going to happen that way, and we both know it, alas.

Let's go with Mars. I like that. A new type of transformation for the new humanity.

Kim Stanley Robinson has a good piece on Mars in this week's NY TIMES Book Review.

(((hugs))) I hope that the land will heal eventually. But I don't think it will be in my lifetime.
