lagilman: coffee or die (truth to power)

I was reminded that today is Armed Forces Day by the sound of "Taps" being played near the Green this afternoon.

*suri raises her glass* To the men and women in uniform, in every branch of service, behind the desk or on the front line. Respect, for the courage of those who serve with honor.

Amen. We just had a young man from our valley die in Iraq while on a rescue mission. Today 5 choppers flew over the valley, I heard, in his honor. It gave me goosebumps.

I've never served, but highly respect the men and women who have and do. OVer the last few years I've found myself, in my own way, serving those who serve our country. Apparently the fact that I've been writing music for the military bands to play is appreciated not only by the military musicians, but by the so-called "regular" (i.e., non-musician) military.

I'm currently working on "The Etude Project" for the Navy School of Music, writing graded concert works for the chamber ensembles at the NSOM. (The School, by the way, trains Army and Marine musicians as well as Navy.) The idea is to help these kids (and they are mostly still kids) learn their craft and develop their talents in =6 months= (what musicians in academic programs learn in about 2 1/2 years!), so they can go into performing units (bands) and not have to go to "the sandbox" (Iraq). I like to think I'm helping to save a life here and there.

WTF? I suddenly got logged out of LJ and so my comment to the person writing music for military types went in as anonymous. Sorry.
