This fourth book in Gilman's engaging Retrievers series delivers-- it's fast-paced, laugh-out-loud funny and just plain entertaining. Wren and Sergei's relationship, as usual, is wonderfully written. As their relationship moves in an unexpected direction, it makes perfect sense-- and leaves the reader on the edge of her seat for the next book.

(I'm a little bemused that they don't mention the magic, the twisty politics, and oh yeah, the lovely, nasty violence tastefully described. But "wonderfully written" makes up for a lot.)

Summary:

A fragile truce has been brokered between the Mage Council and the independent lonejacks and Wren Valere is uncomfortably front and center, having taken on an advisory position in the face of escalating vigilantism.

On top of that, Wren and her partner, Sergei, have hit a bumpy patch in their relationship-- and she's just not sure how to help him when she thinks that she's the cause. Working separately but on the same side, Wren and Sergei need to figure out a way to save not only their friends and chosen family from the vigilantes but also their relationship from each other.
