I woke up this morning and thought to myself: 'self, you are not going to make it into the shower, much less through the day, without coffee.'

Thankfully, there was coffee to be had.

but that's not what I'm here to post about. There's some nice news, for a change, from the world of the Awl Bidness......

ConocoPhillips supports greenhouse gas regulation

In so doing, ConocoPhillips breaks ranks with the two biggest U.S.
oil companies - ExxonMobil and Chevron - as well as with the Bush
administration. With revenues of $188 billion in 2006, ConocoPhillips
operates in 40 nations around the world from its headquarters in Bush
country - Houston, Texas.

I know where I'm filling up my car from now on...

Which stations do they run?

I mean, what's the name over the pump?

According to Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ConocoPhillips) they operate Union 76 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_76).

Excellent. That's where we'll be filling up, as well.

Ummm, let's see... ConocoPhillips owns Conoco (unsurprisingly), Phillips 66 (ditto), and I think they might actually own the Union 76 retail name now.

The only real problem is they moved their HQ to Houston when they merged, leaving Bartlesville, OK, minus its major employer (Phillips Petroleum), although the big chemical/polymer R&D facility is still there.

Of course, "Conoco" is a smurshed version of "Connecticut Oil Company"...

I live in California - I don't think I've ever seen a Phillips sign over a pump, much less a Conoco sign.

But if it's 76? That, we've got.

I don't generally trust Wikipedia for a variety of reasons, however, this page of ConocoPhillips brand names (http://www.conocophillips.com/brands/index.htm) does in fact confirm that Union 76 retail gasoline is them, along with Conoco, Phillips 66, Jet (most of Europe and Thailand), Turkpetrol (Turkey), COOP (Switzerland), ProJet (Malaysia), and Kendall Motor Oil.

And my husband remembers, possibly correctly, that it was these guys who also were the first to take the MBTEs out of their gas, while the other biggies were fighting that tooth and nail.

Hey, I'm in San Francisco. We're lefties, we notice that stuff...

Urgh. MBTE, left-handed methanol, nasty stuff. 'round here in SE Michigan, it was home-grown Marathon that used that crap. I avoided Marathon-supplied stations (Marathon and Speedway brands) for a long time as soon as I figured out that was what gave me headaches.

Of course, I was avoiding gasohols on general principles at the time -- they killed my gas mileage. Same car, same driving, lost 15% in mpg if I used gasahol.

Now? My daily driver's a diesel. :)
