Still being eaten by sharks (glad to be providing amusement to y'all) but I wanted to pass along this link by way of [livejournal.com profile] deedop and [livejournal.com profile] scarlettina about Kathy Sierra, and the 'culture' of hate-spewing on the Internet. Go. Read. React.

It's funny, in a horrible way -- much of BURNING BRIDGES and DOWN INTO DARKNESS is about hatred, and taking a stand, and the costs of both. And as I'm writing it, I'm wondering to myself "is this too over the top? Is this too obvious, too insane, too self-destructive for people to believe could happen?"

And, as always -- Life trumps plot without even trying.

Now, if you'll excuse me, my shark is calling.

The Post has had articles about female law students who can't get work because anonymous members of their class have been having a virtual beauty pageant and wankoff, complete with giving out full personal contact information and suggesting that people follow them around to get cell phone pictures. This is what comes up first when their names are googled, so the conservative firms won't touch the women.

And the trolls have announced that anyone who tries to find out who they are or shut them down will get worse. Feministe, Pandagon et all have been talking about it.

Oh. My. God.

I looked at some of the stuff posted about Kathy Sierra and wonder if we have created so many monsters that we can't recover. I hear music that suggests women are names I can't even think about let alone use and which supports killing anyone for almost any reason. I see tv programs and websites and hear comments supporting rape, hitting women(and the elderly and children), abuse and threats of violence to gays, anyone who isn't part of someone's (i.e. you aren't my color, sex, religion, politics, etc) group considered to be perfectly acceptable. Have we bred the empathy out of people?

Anyone got suggestions on how to stop this? I'm considering giving up my membership in the human race if this is all we have to look forward to. I'd rather be an alien.
