Man, I'd have sent Victor off to go be self-sacrificing somewhere. That big an idealist, she was just going to be a distraction to him, anyway.

I have never understood why it is considered romantic to leave the guy you really love to go back to the guy you might have once loved.

But I love the movie anyway.

seen from a certain perspective, "Casablanca" isn't a romance but a feminist tragedy. Ilsa never really had a chance for happiness - everything for her revolves around Her Man, whoever Her Man is at the moment. And Victor showed that he was willing to make sacrifices for her - he stayed when she was sick, for example, at great risk to himself. That's Romantic[tm].

Then again, this is the woman who told Her Man (of the moment) to do all the thinking for them all. I sort of lost patience with her at that mment, the first time I saw the movie.

I am a woman of the 21st century. Ilsa.... was not.

I don't think I said anywhere that she sacrifices herself for her man, but that her world revolves around her heart -- and whoever holds it at that moment. It's a rather different thing....

Ah. I misunderstood. This movie is why I love La Marseillaise despite it being a bloodthirsty nationalist hymn. The scene in Rick's place where even the woman fraternizing with the Germans sings it send shivers up and down my spine.
