My Boskone Schedule
Feb. 3rd, 2007 02:23 pmSince I'll be lugging the laptop and a deadline with me, my schedule is thankfully light:
Sat 12:00 noon: Kaffeklatsch
Sat 3:00pm: Autographing
Laura Anne Gilman
Walter H. Hunt
Sat 5:00pm: From Urban Fantasy to the New Weird: Trends in Fantasy over the Last 20 Years
Mark Del Franco
Laura Anne Gilman
Christopher Stasheff
Sun 12:00 noon: Traps to Avoid: Scams and Other Issues that Can Affect New Writers
So the golden rule is: in any authentic deal, money should flow toward the writer.
What other tips can our panel, old pros at publishing and agenting, offer to help newbies
escape stealth vanity houses, reading services, upfront-billing agents, and other sleazy
snares?
Laura Anne Gilman
Michael Kabongo
Teresa Nielsen Hayden
Eleanor Wood
Sun 1:30pm Reading
(pssst, I will be reading from BURNING BRIDGES. And I may have a few giveaways....)

That's opposite Art Show sales and the art auction, meaning I need to be over at art show sales working on the convention instead, alas.

========================
I don't know if Jim Mann's on LiveJournal, but his wife Laurie Mann is as lauriemann.livejournal.com (lauriemann.livejournal.com) . There's a Boskone meeting I assume before the NESFA February Business Meeting tomorrow and I'll probably mention the scheduling unhappiness to at least one other person working on the art show, but Jim and Laurie live in Pittsburgh, not within an hour or so of the NESFA Clubhouse in Somerville, MA.
I immediately got suspicious about the timing because Boskone almost always has art show closeout for bidsheet auction at noon, with the Wall sweeping out of everyone except art show staff occurring at noon, then next hour being going through the art show identifying what's sold on bid sheet, what's going to the voice auction, what's available for sale for after closeout price when the artshow reopens, and what's supposed to be going home with/to whomever put it in the show (Boskone starting having a section in the artshow for people to resell artwork they'd had for a while and wanted to sell off, last year, and is continuing that this year I believe. Also, some art is agented rather than coming directly from the artist). With all that sorted out there's the voice auction of the pieces taken down, and the re-opening of the artshow for sales and pickup of art. Since 1:30 PM is an hour and a half after the artshow closes for the staff to go through and do the discrimination, I went and checked the Boskone website for the exact times for art show sales and voice auction.

Date: 2007-02-03 10:43 pm (UTC)It's tough, scheduling a convention. Someone's got to take the ouch spots. My turn in the barrel. etc etc voice of experience and resignation.

Date: 2007-02-04 10:23 am (UTC)That emphasizes my point, though: that scheduling is a tough job (is so-and-so going to be awake? Is so-and-so going to still be here? How many people will actually show up if we make a panel too early/late?) and that everyone gets their shot at both the 'good' slots and the 'bad' ones -- you can't whinge and moan over everything!
(well, you CAN, but that's both tacky and bad guest-manners)

Date: 2007-02-05 01:10 pm (UTC)So new? Don't you always bring a laptop with you to get some writing done while at a con?

Date: 2007-02-05 01:55 pm (UTC)That should be "nu?" and no, I don't. And I try not to bring deadlines, since (IMO) if I have a deadline I have no business being out and about on a convention-sized scale until it's done.
But since I will miss Lunacon, I felt the need to mingle a bit.
